Bantams, PeeWees pick up SDAHA league wins over weekend

BANTAMS

The Bantam Rangers won a pair of SDAHS games at Larson Ice Center before capping off the weekend with another league win on the road to move into second place in the standings with 21 points courtesy of a 10-1-0-1 record.

Brookings plays host to No. 1 Sioux Falls on Friday before traveling to Sioux Center on Saturday.

• Brookings 7, Mitchell 2

The Rangers dominated play as they outshot the Marlins, 40-15, with Kade Brecher earning the win in goal with 13 saves.

Logan Bortnem’s unassisted tally less than 2 minutes into the game got Brookings on the scoreboard, but the Marlins needed just 25 seconds to tie it up at 1-1. Talon Richter scored off a Brody Powers setup before Bortnem added an unassisted short-handed goal and Wes Koenig found the back of the net off as assist from Ashton Witte to make it 4-1 after one.

Late in the second period, Mitchell cashed in on a power-play opportunity but Koenig answered off a Trenton Pederson assist to make it 5-2 through two.

Brookings tacked on two insurance goals in the third – Koenig for a hat trick with Witte picking up another assist; and then, Bortnem notching his hat trick with a late unassisted goal for the final margin.

• Brookings 7, Fremont 2

The Flyers scored first but Brookings responded with four consecutive goals to take a 4-1 lead after the first frame. Bortnem then tied the game off a Talon Richter assist; Isaac Schulte lit the lamp off a Koenig setup; and then, Koenig helped on two Witte goals for the three-goal advantage as he earned a playmaker.

Caden Krogman scored off another Koenig assist before Koenig notched an unassisted goal. Pederson closed out the second-period scoring with another unassisted goal as the Rangers led 7-1.

Fremont converted a power-play chance midway through the third for the 7-2 final.

Brookings outshot the Flyers, 34-16, as Carter Schulz finished with 14 goals for the win

• Brookings 6, Yankton 2

The Rangers tallied three first-period goals, and then, tacked on two in the second and an extra in the third for the 6-2 win over the Miracle.

Krogman opened the scoring off the first of two assists for Koenig – Witte tickled the twine 4 minutes later – and then Richter scored off a Bortnem setup for a 3-0 lead.

Richter scored an unassisted goal less than a minute into the second before Koenig found the back of the net off a Witte assist.

Yankton scored late in the second to make it 5-1 and then added a second goal less than a minute into the third, but Koenig countered that one with an unassisted goal a minute later for the final score.

Brookings outshot the Miracle, 42-13, as Holden Richardson picked up the win in net with 11 saves.

14U GIRLS

The 14U Rangers dropped three non-league games to Omaha over the weekend at Larson Ice Center as the Lady Jr. Lancers posted wins of 7-1, 7-0 and 7-4.

Brookings travels to Aberdeen for a pair of league games over the weekend.

• Omaha 7, Brookings 1

The Lancers scored three goals in each of the first two periods and then tacked on one in the third before Maggie Dunbar tallied an unassisted goal with less than five minutes to play for the final score.

Omaha outshot the Rangers, 27-9, as Heidi Merriman finished with 20 saves in the loss.

• Omaha 7, Brookings 0

The Lancers again dominated play, outshooting Brookings, 34-4, as they scored three goals in the first period and then added two in both the second and third for the shutout win as Merriman collected 27 saves.

• Omaha 7, Brookings 4

The Lancers built a 3-1 lead after one as Savannah Barber tallied an unassisted goal for the Rangers in the first period.

Barber pulled Brookings within 3-2 off a Payton Triplett assist to open the second period, but Omaha answered with a pair of goals to lead 5-2 through two.

Barber notched a hat trick less than a minute into the third period as Julissa Peterson earned the assist, but the Lancers sandwiched a pair of goals around Barber’s fourth score – unassisted – for the three-goal win.

The Lancers held a 30-18 edge in shots as Merriman notched 23 saves.

PEEWEE A

The PeeWee A Rangers outscored their opponents, 35-1, over the weekend for three SDAHA wins. Brookings won two at Yankton – 14-0 and 13-0 – before downing Watertown, 8-1.

The Rangers are third in the standings with 28 points, courtesy of a 14-1 record.

Brookings plays the Lakers again on Friday in Watertown before traveling to Aberdeen to face the No. 1 Cougars in a pair of games on Sunday.

• Brookings 8, Watertown 1

The Rangers scored twice in the first period; added five in the second; and then tacked on one in the third for the final as Addison Ronning collected the win with five saves.

Zach Struck opened the scoring off an assist from Miles Merhib before Owen Schneider made it 2-0 off a Luke Honkomp setup.

In the second, Jacob Kahle and Jack Merritt both scored off assists from Struck, and then Merritt lit the lamp off a Kahle assist. Breck Hirrschoff found the back of the net as Honkomp and Schneider earned assists, before Honkomp scored with Merhib and Schneider picking up the assist to make it 7-1 through two.

In the third period, Kahle provided for the final while Merritt picked up the assist as the Rangers held a 36-6 edge in shots.

• Brookings 13, Yankton 0

The Rangers lit the lamp four times in the first; six times in the second; and three times in the third as Ronning earned the shutout win in goal with seven saves.

Struck notched a hat trick with a goal in each period; Schneider, Honkomp, Kahle and Chase Karch scored two goals apiece; and Eli Johnson and Hirrschoff each tallied one as Brookings outshot the Miracle, 41-7, with Ronning earning the shutout win.

Kahle earned a playmaker, plus one; Merritt and Honkomp set up two goals apiece; and Schneider, Struck and Hirrschoff each had an assist.

• Brookings 14, Yankton 0

Hirrschoff tallied a hat trick in the first period; added a second-period goal; and had a pair of assists as the Rangers outshot Yankton, 41-8, with Ronning earning the shutout win.

Schneider collected his hat trick with back-to-back goals in the first; found the back of the net in the second; and set up Kahle’s goal in the third.

Kahle had scored in the third in addition to earning a playmaker, plus one; while Struck strolled in and knocked in two, to go along with an assist in the second period.

Jacob Peterson opened the second-period scoring and closed the scoring in the third as Honkomp had scored to end the second period.

David Brink and Karch combined to set up Peterson’s goal in the second.

David Brink, Karch and Merritt also picked up an assist.

PEEWEE B

The PeeWee B Blue Rangers skated to a 6-0 shutout over Brandon Valley on Saturday. Blue travels to Watertown on Friday before heading to Aberdeen for a pair of games against the Cougars over the weekend.

Gavan Stewart’s goal off a Garrett Bothe assist midway through the first period stood up as the Rangers led 1-0 after one.

Brookings scored four goals in the second period and then tacked on an insurance tally in the third for the final margin.

Bothe sandwiched a pair of goals around a Jordan Raatz tally before Gage Peterson found the back of the net for a 5-1 lead through two. Bothe’s first goal was unassisted and the second was set up by Raatz while Stewart assisted on Raatz’ tally.

Peterson added an unassisted goal midway through the third for the final score as Brookings held a 28-10 edge in shots with Egan Jensen earning the shutout win in goal.
