BRUCE – A Bruce man was arrested on multiple charges after he allegedly entered a garage and tried to steal a vehicle, according to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Jorgel Lopez, 19, of Bruce, is facing charges of first-degree burglary, criminal entry of a motor vehicle, criminal trespass, DUI-first offense, first-degree vandalism, reckless driving, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and underage consumption, Sgt. Kevin Murfield said.

The incident occurred at 2:40 a.m. Saturday in the 400 block of First Street in Bruce, Murfield said.

“The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, Brookings Police Department and South Dakota State University Police were dispatched to the 400 block of First Street in Bruce for a report of a suspect trying to enter a residence,” Murfield said.

“While responding, the homeowner reported the subject had gained access to the home’s attached garage and made entry into an unlocked vehicle. Upon arrival, deputies discovered the subject had been able to start a vehicle located in the garage and attempted to back the vehicle through the closed garage door,” Murfield said.

“The suspect later fled on foot and was believed to be in the 300 block of Madison Street. After a search of a second property, the suspect was located,” Murfield said.

“The Bruce First Responders were requested and, after assessment, the suspect was transported to the Brookings hospital by the Brookings Ambulance to be treated for frostbite-related injuries,” Murfield said.

Damage to the garage door is estimated to be $3,500, he added.
