Beresford beats Sioux Valley; Vincent injured

VOLGA – Sioux Valley dropped a 47-27 game to Beresford during Big East Conference girls’ basketball action Thursday night and potentially lost its top player in the process.

Junior Miakken Vincent went down with a right knee injury early in the fourth quarter. Her status for the remainder of the season was not immediately known.

“Well just leaving kind of an emotional locker room with the injury we sustained to Miakken, I’m just praying it’s not what we all think it is,” said Cossack coach Jamie Granum. “It’s bigger than the game. And the scoreboard, I guess, is kind of my second thought.

“I witnessed her brother (Tayt) getting a knee injury and I remember like it was yesterday sitting on that bench in that locker room – you just hurt and you feel for these kids and the time and the effort they put in. To see anyone get injured is just bad stuff. Bad stuff happens to good people, and we witnessed that tonight.”

The Watchdogs forced 38 turnovers, 14 of which came on steals.

Jessica Niles finished with 13 points, six assists, six steals and five rebounds.

Kennedy Goblirsch added 10 points.

Vincent scored eight points in the first quarter as the Cossacks held a 12-9 advantage after 8 minutes.

Beresford moved ahead 22-15 at halftime and Goblirsch opened the second-half scoring with a bucket, but Sioux Valley continued to hang around in the third.

Reagan Johnson had a putback and later hit a 3-pointer, before Ashley Bjerke converted in the paint to cut the deficit to 24-22 at the 3:42 mark of the third period.

The Watchdogs took a 29-22 advantage into the fourth on a basket by Niles and a trey from Laura Bogue.

Bogue hit another 3 early in the fourth to make it a 10-point game and Beresford gradually pulled away after that.

Vincent and Johnson both ended up with eight points.

Sioux Valley (1-4, 1-2) takes on Webster Area in the Swiftel Center Classic on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Brookings.

Beresford (4-1, 3-0) heads to Parker on Saturday, Dec. 29.
