Bertram, Schiller, VanderWal shine at Region 2A meet

HAYTI – The Hamlin girls and Madison boys won team titles at the Region 2A Track and Field Meet on Thursday.

The top two finishers in each event and those achieving in-season qualifying standards advanced to the Class A State Track and Field Meet, to be held Friday, May 24, at Tea Area High School and Saturday, May 25, at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.

Girls

The Chargers totaled 165 team points and Madison was second at 145. Flandreau (117) finished third and Sioux Valley (62) fourth.

Senior Ashtyn Bertram had a big day, winning the 100-meter dash in 12.7 seconds and the 200 in 26.2.

She also anchored the Fliers’ victorious 4x100- and 4x200-meter relay teams, which finished in times of 51.8 and 1:49.1, respectively. Isabella Pavlis, Hannah Parsley and Cassidy Keith ran the first three legs in both relays.

Madie Hursey placed first in the 1,600 with a time of 5:36.2.

Libby Hursey was runner-up in the 800 in 2:33.1.

Madie Hursey, Maria Parsley, Hannah Parsley and Libby Hursey were second in the 4x800 in 10:15.3. Pavlis, Keith, Libby Hursey and Hannah Parsley matched that finish in the 4x400 with a 4:24.2 clocking.

The Cossacks’ Kamryn Schwartz won the triple jump with a mark of 34 feet, 1 inch.

Boys

The Bulldogs posted 173 team points in first and Hamlin was second at 151. Sioux Valley (117) ended up third and Flandreau (51) was fifth.

Jaxton Schiller and Lane VanderWal led the way for the Cossacks.

Schiller took the 100-meter crown with a time of 11.3 seconds and the 200 with a 23.5 clocking.

VanderWal was first in the triple jump with a mark of 42-2 1/2 and the long jump at 20-3 3/4.

VanderWal, Oliver Vincent, Noah Puetz and Schiller teamed to win the 4x100 and 4x200 relays with times of 45.2 and 1:34.6, respectively.

Colby Gatzke crossed first in the 3,200 (10:59.7) and second in the 1,600 (5:01.1).

Kelton Vincent won the 800 in 2:11. Puetz was runner-up in the triple jump (39-8 1/4).

The Fliers’ Gabe Hobbie, Austin Kulm, Chris Boetger and David Allen placed first in the 4x800 in 8:48.2.

Tathan Headrick, Tristan Bietz, Allen and Hobbie won the medley relay with a time of 3:57.

Kulm ended up second in the 3,200 (11:04.1).
