BROOKIGNS – The Brookings HOSA: Future Health Professionals chapter is a local organization to prepare high school students interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare field.
Last month, HOSA members competed in the State Leadership Conference in events specific to areas of healthcare that peak their interest.
Braydon Mallett, Matt Osmanski and Hossam Halaweish competed in creative problem solving, Kyle Sorbe competed in researched persuasive writing and speaking, and the teams of Jessica Gile/Grace Heier and Kylie Tucker/Ashlyn Borah competed in CPR/first aid.
Kashfia Rahman competed in Knowledge Test: Behavioral health and extemporaneous writing, Erin Yarrow competed in veterinary science, Cassie Munsterman and Kali Skogstad competed in community awareness, and Anna Ayres and Jess Gile in medical terminology.
Braydon Mallett also competed in Knowledge Test: Pathophysiology, and rounding out the Brookings team was Morgan Smith competing in biomedical lab science. Kyle Sorbe also received the South Dakota HOSA: Future Health Professionals scholarship.
Even though this is Brookings’ second showing at the state conference, the group had a competitive showing on the state level, with seven International Leadership Conference qualifiers.
• Matt Osmanski, Hossam Halaweish and Braydon Mallett – Creative problem solving (state champions)
• Kyle Sorbe – Researched persuasive writing and speaking (state champion)
• Kashfia Rahman – Knowledge Test: Behavioral health and extemporaneous writing
• Ashlyn Borah and Kylie Tucker – CPR/first aid (state champions)
While this team was able to qualify many members for the conference in Texas this June, they are asking the community for financial assistance. The chapter is still too new to be able to financially assist its members to travel to Texas this summer and is asking the community for donations and/or fundraising opportunities to help cover the significant cost.
