BROOKINGS – The Brookings High School Marching Band participated in the Youth in Music competition at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis Oct. 13, turning in a solid performance.

The Youth in Music competition is a prestigious marching band competition in that is by invitation only.

“They bring in judges from all over the United states,” BHS Band Director Ron Stary said. “They’re all highly regarded in their respective musical fields. The band was judged in vis-ual effect, winds, percussion, color guard and drum major presentation.

The BHS Band competed against two other Class AAA schools, placing second behind Sioux Falls Roosevelt. The top bands from each of the four classes, along with the top point-earners, then performed in the finals that evening.

“This was the first year we didn’t make finals,” Stary said, “but when we saw the caliber of the performances, especially from the seven bigger AAAA schools, it was hard to be too disappointed. The shows were highly impressive.”

Rosemount High School from Minnesota won the overall competition.

The competition is sponsored by the United States Marine Corps, Yamaha Corp., Schmitt Music, Stanbury Uniforms, and Marriott.

Today, the band will perform in its final competition at Quad State at the Dakota Dome in Vermillion. The competition begins at 1 p.m., and the Bobcats will perform at 3:30 p.m.
