BHS Tennis competes at ESD

MITCHELL – The Brookings girls’ tennis team competed in the Eastern South Dakota Conference Tournament at Hitchcock Park in Mitchell on Tuesday.

The Bobcats had six girls compete. Sophie Tanner won her opening match against Huron’s Lizzy Heinen, 10-4, in a play in game. She then fell to Brandon Valley’s Michaela Jerke, 10-2, in her second match. She also lost to Pierre’s Kara Weiss, 8-5.

Elle Schulte-Coplan won her opening match against Yankton’s Meagan Scott, 10-4. She then fell to Watertown’s Faith Berg, 10-1 before losing to Laney Gonsor, 8-1.

Camryn Vermeer lost her opening match to Mitchell’s Amber Moller, 10-4. Paige Foster lost to Harrisburg’s Nicole Lin, 10-4, and Brea Tonsager fell to Huron’s Bethany Engelhart, 10-1. 

Anika Hood lost to Mitchell’s Maddie Childs, 10-3. She also lost to Brandon Valley’s Keera Kriech, 8-4.

In doubles action, Schulte-Coplan and Hooda lost Pierre’s Jocelyn Corrales and Caitlin Ott, 10-1. Foster and Tonsager fell to Huron’s Bianca Medina and Bethany Engelhart, 10-1. Vermeer and Tanner lost to Brandon Valley’s Marie Pelleiter and Michaela Jerke, 10-1.

Watertown won the team event with 282 points. Aberdeen Central came in second (255) and Mitchell finished a half point ahead of Yankton to come in third (164.5).

Brookings will compete in the State Tournament next. The Tournament begins on Oct. 6 at 8 a.m. and will be played at the Sioux Park Tennis Courts in Rapid City.
