BROOKINGS – Over the course of Sunday afternoon and evening, nearly 100 people gathered at Pioneer Park to welcome Spanish-speaking people to Brookings.
Bienvenidos means “welcome” in Spanish.
To demonstrate interest in that growing population, many of whom work in Brookings County agriculture, a group formed this summer to explore ways to reach out to Spanish-speaking neighbors. The group is called Bienvenidos a Brookings.
The group’s first event coincided at the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, which was designated and enacted into law in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan to celebrate the long and important contributions to America made by Hispanic and Latino people.
Sunday’s gathering for a potluck meal, soccer and singing brought together families of both longtime and new residents to Brookings County, including South Dakota State University faculty and students as well as community members.
