Big second period lifts Lakers over Rangers, 5-3

BROOKINGS – Watertown used a solid second period to power to a 5-3 win over the Rangers in South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association boys’ action on Thursday night at Larson Ice Center.

The Lakers’ Connor Bramer lit the lamp 6 minutes into the game to give the visitors a 1-0 lead after a period as Greg Petereit and Jacob Gerber picked up assists.

The Rangers tied the game early in the second quarter when Trevor Kuechenmeister netted the puck with an unassisted short-handed goal, but Watertown answered with three goals in just over three minutes to take a 4-1 edge into the second intermission.

Alex Ortmeier lit the lamp with 4:03 to play in the period off a Coby Steiner setup; Adam Thomas pushed the Laker lead to 3-1 as Steiner and Hayden Kruse earned assists; and then, Kruse scored off another Steiner helper for the three-goal advantage.

Brenden Way found the back of the net just 26 seconds into the final frame off a Mason Gerstner assist to get the Rangers within 4-2, but Adam Thomas scored 4 minutes later to give the Lakers a three-goal cushion with 12:17 left.

Austin Lesnar provided the final margin with an unassisted short-handed goal with 2:03 on the clock.

Watertown held a 32-26 edge in shots as Dylan Geraets finished with 20 saves on 24 shots and Tristian Hokenson stopped seven of the eight shots that he faced.

The Rangers drop to 11-3-2 on the season and sit in third place in the league standings with 24 points. They close the regular season with two games at home this weekend – Huron at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday and Aberdeen at 1:45 p.m. on Sunday.
