Bismarck drops Blizzard, 6-4

Posted

BROOKINGS – Bismarck pulled away from a 3-3 tie through two periods with three goals in the third in a 6-4 win over the Blizzard on Friday night at Larson Ice Center.

David Israel lit the lamp less than a minute into the game to spot Brookings the early lead before TJ Koufis found the back of the net to give Brookings a 2-0 advantage with 7 minutes to play in the first. Brock Draeger and Brady Bjork set up Israel while Johnny Johnson and Dominic Dumas helped Koufis.

But the Bobcats cashed in on a power-play opportunity when Willy Stauber tallied an unassisted goal with 4:36 to play in the period to make it 2-1 heading into the first intermission.

Midway through the second period, Daniel Chladek scored back-to-back goals – the second on a power-play chance – to give Bismarck a 3-2 lead with 3:41 on the clock. Gabe Wahl scored at the 1:10 mark off an Artjoms Lapiks assist to even the game at 3-3 through two.

Hunter Olson scored a short-handed goal to put the Bobcats back in the lead 5 1/2 minutes into the third period, and then, Ryan Taylor scored with 9 minutes left to make it 5-3.

David Israel found the back of the net off assists from Koufis and Lapiks to get the Blizzard within 5-4 with 4:58 remaining, but Jacob Marti’s empty-net goal just before time expired provided for the final margin.

Brookings held a 27-20 advantage in shots, but the Bobcats converted 2-of-5 power-play opportunities as the Blizzard came up empty on five chances.

John Roberts had 23 saves for the win in goal while Travis Allen stopped 14 of the 19 shots that he faced.

The two teams square off tonight at 7:05 at LIC in the Blizzard’s final home game of the season.

Thursday’s Game

 Austin 4, Brookings 3, SO

The Blizzard built a 2-0 lead after a period, but Austin evened the game in the third period and then won in an extended shootout in a Central Division makeup game.

Brookings’ own Carter Krogman opened the scoring less than 4 minutes into play off assists by Anthony Szurlej and Bud Winter before Johnny Johnson added a goal with 4:09 left as Krogman and Winter helped.

The Bruins cut the deficit in half 6 1/2 minutes into the second period when Ben Alquist lit the lamp off an Adam Szubert setup. Luke Aquaro lit the lamp with 6:56 on the clock to make it 3-1 as Sam Antenucci and Ryan Green earned assists. But Austin’s Dante Sheriff found the back of the net with 3:49 to play to pull the Bruins within a goal, 3-2, through two.

Sheriff leveled the game with 42 seconds left to send it into overtime as Jared Christy and Lane Krenzen picked up the assists.

Neither team had success in the 5 minutes of extra time so the shootout began.

Krenzen scored on Austin’s second chance, but Green matched the goal on the Blizzard’s third opportunity. From there, the Bruins’ Kyle McClellan and Brennan Boynton for Brookings both stopped six straight tries, until Kyle Herbster got the go-ahead goal past Boynton. McClellan stopped Krogman’s game-tying shot and the Bruins improved to 31-19-0-6 with the shootout win.

The Blizzard held a 29-26 edge in shots as both teams earned 60 penalty minutes and went 0-for-10 on power-play opportunities.

McClellan collected 26 saves in the win while Boynton stopped 22 Austin shots.
