Black post 1-2 weekend record


SIOUX FALLS – The Bombers Black closed their weekend on a high note with a 10-0 shutout of Yankton on Sunday in the Sioux Falls Tournament after dropping both games on Saturday – 12-6 to Marshall and 17-12 to Sioux Falls East.

Brookings, 21-16-1 on the season, play host to Renner in a 4 p.m. doubleheader at Mickelson Field on Wednesday.

 

Sunday’s Game

• Brookings 10, Yankton 0

Max Struck and Max Kjelden combined on the mound to limit Yankton to a single hit as Struck gave up a single in the second, but the batter was thrown out at second trying to stretch it into a double.

Struck finished with one strikeout while Kjelden walked two and struck out one.

Cole Mahlum led Black’s offense with three hits, including a two-run home run. Kjelden had two hits, including a double, as he drove in one run. Jackson Krogman and Mason Bebensee each had a hit and RBI as Henry Hammrich and Wes Koenig both finished with two RBIs.

Saturday’s Games

• S.F. East 17, Brookings 12

East sent 13 batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring nine runs, to take control early.

The Bombers battled back with three in the second and four each in the fourth and fifth, but Sioux Falls answered with seven runs over the fourth and fifth to keep its lead.

Kyle Bauer suffered the loss on the mound after giving up nine runs – only one of which was earned – in one inning of work as he allowed four hits; walked four; and struck out one.

Nick Schefers tossed 3 1/3 innings and gave up seven runs – four earned – on four hits and five walks with one strikeout.

Krogman got the final two outs as he allowed one earned run on one hit with one walk.

Krogman had two of the Bombers’ 13 hits, which included a double, as he drove in four runs. Noah Bayer also had two hits, including a double, with two RBIs.

Kjelden plated two runs with two hits as Struck and Koenig each added a pair of hits.

• Marshall 12, Brookings 6

Marshall used a five-run sixth inning to extend a 6-4 advantage into a seven-run lead en route to the win.

The Bombers committed seven errors in the game, which led to five unearned runs for Marshall.

Reid Brettschneider suffered the loss as he gave up five runs on six hits and three walks with one strikeout over the first four innings. Bebensee tossed the final three frames and allowed seven runs – two earned – on four hits with three strikeouts.

Honkomp went 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple and three RBIs to lead Black. Koenig added a single and a double with two runs batted in while Struck added three hits and four runs scored.
