Blizzard drop 5-2 decision to Bismarck

Troy Maroney/Register: Brock Draeger fires a shot during a Blizzard power-play chance in the first period of Brookings’ 5-2 Central Division setback to fourth-place Bismarck on Friday night at Larson Ice Center. The two squads face off tonight at 7:05 p.m.

BROOKINGS – Despite holding a 26-21 advantage in shots, the Blizzard couldn’t stay with Bismarck in a 5-2 Central Division loss on Friday night at Larson Ice Center.

The Bobcats built a 2-0 lead after a power-play goal by Adam Stacho midway through the period before Austin Jouppi lit the lamp with less than five minutes to play.

But John Kalijian made it a one-goal game with one second on the clock when he buried a one-touch from the left wing ¬– right off a faceoff – for a power-play tally to make it 2-1 heading into the first intermission.

Ryan Taylor answered for Bismarck with a power-play goal just 77 seconds into the second frame. Jouppi’s second goal of the game with 10 seconds to play gave the Bobcats a 4-1 lead through two.

Ninety seven seconds into the third period, Bartek Bison got his name in the scorebook with a goal to push Bismarck’s lead to four goals – 5-1.

Ryan Green’s goal with less than five minutes remaining provided for the final as Bud Winter and Gabe Wahl earned assists.

John Roberts earned the win in goal after stopping 24 Brookings shots and Jack Caruso notched 16 saves in the loss.

Brookings, 3-17-1-1 on the season with eight points, plays host to the fourth-place Bobcats (13-7-1-0) again tonight. The puck drops at 7:05 at LIC.
