The Brookings Blizzard, members of the NAHL, announced that Josh Boyer has committed to play Division I college hockey at the University of Nebraska Omaha, a member of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.

Boyer, who grew up in Omaha, Neb., was a standout in his first year in Brookings with his point a game production. The 6-foot-2, 182-pound forward led the Blizzard in points (58), goals (27), assists (31) and power-play points (17). Boyer’s two game-winning goals both came in overtime.

He was selected to play in this year’s Top Prospect Tournament where he scored one goal in two games for Select Team Red.

“I feel honored and excited to have this opportunity to play Division I hockey for the University of Nebraska Omaha,” said Boyer. “Once I visited campus, I knew it was the right choice. It gave me a feeling of familiarity, since I used to go to UNO games in my younger years. I like the coach’s philosophy and their dedication to continuing my development into the best hockey player I can be.

“I’d like to thank Coach Moe Mantha for my time in Brookings. I’ll use what I learned from Moe throughout my career, and in life. I want to also thank my family and my teammates for all their support.”

Added Mantha, the Blizzard’s head coach: “Josh is a leader by example with his work ethic both on and off the ice. UNO is getting a very good hockey player with tons of potential ahead of him. Boyer has great character who will one day be a leader for the Mavericks.”

Boyer’s billet parents in Brookings were Dan and Suzanne Stiluka.

“From the first day Josh moved into our home we could see that he was someone with extremely high character and would fit right in,” they said. “As we got to know Josh it was apparent how hard he was willing to work to not only become a better hockey player, but a well-rounded individual as well. We are so excited to see what he will continue to accomplish on his hockey journey.”

Billet parents are the families that house the Blizzard players throughout the season. They mean so much to the success of junior hockey, by taking these players into their homes and treating them like one of their own.
