Bobcat Band fall preview is Saturday

BROOKINGS – The Brookings High School Marching Band’s annual fall show preview and taco feed is set for 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday at the BHS Athletic Complex. The band performs at 12:30 p.m.

“We invite the whole community to come out to our fundraiser to enjoy some good food and hear the band for the first time this season,” BHS band director Ron Stary said. “The band has just finished more than two weeks of band camp, and they are ready to step onto the field and let everyone see how their hard work has paid off. I’m so proud of these kids and their work ethic.”

This year’s theme is “El Barrio,” a tribute to Spanish Harlem. They chose the theme in part because the band is taking a trip to New York in the spring. There, the Drum Line, Jazz Band and Concert Band will all compete, giving the students another opportunity to perform on a national level.

“The kids are raising money as a team and as individuals,” Stary said. “The Fall Preview will help fund the marching band season, when the band travels nearly every Saturday to compete against other talented organizations.”

The event also serves as the first opportunity for the public to see the new 40-foot Bobcat Marching Band trailer. The trailer will transport props, instruments and more as the band travels to Bobcat games and band competitions. Tax-deductible sponsorships for the trailer are available through the Brookings Schools Music Education Foundation.

“The trailer will represent our band, school and community throughout the region during the entire season,” Stary said. “We want it to be our calling card as we pull into the parking lot.”

Mayor Keith Corbett will be at the Fall Preview to recognize the Bobcat Band as music ambassadors as they compete in four states.

Midwest Fresh is catering the fundraising event. Cost is $7 for a Marching Taco with all the fixings, along with a drink and a cookie.
