Bobcat baseball team goes 1-1 in Border Battle

SIOUX FALLS – Brookings went 1-1 at the Border Battle on Saturday at Harmodon Complex, beating Fargo South 17-2 in five innings after dropping a 10-1 contest to Fargo Shanley.

The Bobcats (2-1) play at Mitchell on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

• Brookings 17, Fargo South 2 (5 inn.)

Tyler Kreutner and Brandin Heesch combined on a no-hitter, and the Bobcats scored 11 runs in the opening inning to take control early.

Kreutner threw three innings, striking out six batters and walking two.

Heesch surrendered a pair of unearned runs with two strikeouts and a pair of walks.

Jacob Schoon went 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored. Parker Beers was 2-for-2 with two runs.

Cody Niklason went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs. Akren Prodoehl finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Jacob Devine scored three times. Chris Lerdal had two RBIs and a pair of runs. Brandon Nelson also scored twice. Kreutner tallied an RBI double.

Brookings added five runs in the second and one in the third to move ahead 17-0.

The Bruins scored both their runs in the top of the fifth.

Miles Ulschmid took the loss after giving up 10 runs on five hits and five walks in two-thirds of an inning.

Sixteen of the Bobcats’ 17 runs were earned.

The Deacons pulled away from a 2-0 lead with eight runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Justin Dekeyser gave up one run on five hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks in a complete game performance.

Leadoff hitter Luke Sandy went 4-for-4 with two triples, a double, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Brayden Koenig finished 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Jace Dew added a pair of singles, an RBI and two runs.

For the Bobcats, Devine had an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.

Kreutner, Jameson Meyer, Schoon and Niklason had the team’s other hits.

Devine, the starter, took the loss after giving up two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in three innings. Schoon surrendered eight runs – five earned – on eight hits and two walks over the next 3 1/3 innings. Justin Devine recorded the final two outs, including one by strikeout, and allowed one hit.
