BOX ELDER – The Brookings varsity basketball teams finished with a win and loss in Saturday afternoon games at Douglas.

The girls picked up a 53-38 win over the Patriots, while the boys were thwarted not once, but twice with buzzer-beater shots, falling 66-63 in overtime.

Bobcat basketball splits in Saturday at Douglas

BOX ELDER – The Brookings varsity basketball teams finished with a win and loss in Saturday afternoon games at Douglas.

The girls picked up a 53-38 win over the Patriots, while the boys were thwarted not once, but twice with buzzer-beater shots, falling 66-63 in overtime.

GIRLS VARSITY

 Brookings 53, Douglas 38

Ainsley Shelsta scored 23 points and was the only Bobcat in double-figures as Brookings scored a 53-38 win against Douglas, the third Bobcat win of the year.

Shelsta scored 13 of her 23 points in the first quarter as the Bobcats raced out to a 25-12 lead after one quarter.

Brookings held the Patriots to just three free throws in the second quarter and led 38-15 at the half.

Douglas outscored Brookings 23-15 in the second half.

Logan Smidt added nine points for the Bobcats, while Landree Wilson and Sophia Hammrich each had six points. Hammrich’s points came on a pair of three-pointers.

The Patriots’ Lamara Castaneda scored 11 points to lead her team, with Savannah Gray adding eight and Bailey Clark with six.

Brookings (3-10) heads south to Sioux Falls tomorrow night to take on the Roosevelt Rough Riders at 7p.m. Roosevelt is 1-12 on the year and is holds down the final spot in the SoDak 16 were the season to end today.

The Bobcats sit in 13th in the standings.

BOYS VARSITY

 Douglas 66, Brookings 63 (OT)

Three Bobcats cracked double-figures, but Douglas’ Connor Sauvage twice hit desperation three-pointers as the Patriots defended their home court with a 66-63 win over Brookings.

Sauvage buried an off-balance triple at the horn to end regulation to send the game to overtime tied at 51, then pulled the trick again with 1.1 seconds left to put the Patriots up three.

Brookings got a decent look at a half-court shot at the horn to force a second overtime, but Jack Even’s 40-footer was off the mark after the Bobcats ran a football-like hook-and-ladder play.

Jake Ammann led the Bobcats with 16 points including three triples, while Even added 14 and Sam Hardin had 12.

Hardin also had eight rebounds and four assists in the game.

Zach Moe and Nathan Lease each added seven points for the Bobcats.

Sauvage led Douglas with 27 points, and Sawyer Brose added 16 points and six rebounds, and was 9-of-10 at the free throw line.

Brookings finished 21-of-51 (41 percent) from the field and 8-of-22 from long range. The Bobcats were 13-of-18 at the free throw line.

Douglas finished 21-of-52 (40 percent) overall and 7-of-25 from deep. The Patriots were 17-of-23 at the charity stripe.

Brookings (1-10) hosts Sioux Falls Roosevelt tomorrow night at 7 p.m. The Rough Riders are undefeated at 13-0 and hold the top spot in the SoDak 16 standings.

The Bobcats sit 19th in the standings, three spots out of a postseason SoDak 16 berth.

GIRLS JUNIOR VARSITY

 Brookings 30, Douglas 26

Brookings outscored Douglas 12-9 in the final quarter to escape with a 30-26 win over the Patriots.

Jaden Devine and Gracie Sheridan each scored eight points to lead the Bobcats in the win, with Kymber Buys adding six and Kylie Moe four.

Rayna Johnson had eight to pace the Patriots.

BOYS JUNIOR VARSITY

 Brookings 59, Douglas 36

Nathan Lease was one of three Brookings players in double-figures as the Bobcats took a 26-18 lead at the half and blew the game open with a 23-10 third quarter to win by 23.

Lease finished with a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.

Austin Clark added 14 points, while Jaxton Eck missed out on a double-double of his own by one rebound, scoring 11 points and grabbing nine boards.

Douglas was led by Landon Cast with nine points.

Brookings shot just 34 percent for the game, 21-of-62, and 7-of-29 from long range, and made just half their free throws, 10-of-20.

Douglas was 12-of-41 (29 percent) overall and 3-of-21 from beyond the arc. The Patriots also made just half their shots from the line, 9-of-18.

GIRLS SOPHOMORE

 Brookings 36, Douglas 16

Kymber Buys and Brinleigh Mack each scored 11 points as Brookings outscored Douglas 18-8 in both halves to win 36-16.

Beyond Buys and Mack’s 11 points each, seven Bobcats scored two points each.

Chloe Shreve led Douglas with eight points.

BOYS SOPHOMORE

 Brookings 75, Douglas 46

The Bobcats led 52-23 at halftime and cruised to a 29-point win over the Patriots.

Austin Clark scored 23 points including five triples, while Maxwell Engebretson added 18 points including four from deep. Engebretson also added six rebounds.

Ben Moret and Owen Burns had nine points each.

Douglas’ Isaiah Brewer scored 27 of his team’s 46 points to lead the Patriots.

Brookings was 29-of-53 (55 percent) from the field and lights-out from deep, making 13-of-25 from beyond the three-point arc.

Douglas was just 19-of-49 (39 percent) and 5-of-22 from deep.

Brookings posted a 32-20 advantage in rebounds.
