PIERRE – The Brookings cheer squad placed second in the Eastern South Dakota Conference Competitive Spirit Competition on Thursday.

The Bobcats earned a score of 179 – a point behind champion Harrisburg (180).

“We are very happy with the Bobcats’ performance tonight,” said BHS coach Becca Rounds. “We made some changes in the cheer section and the routine scored well with those changes.

“Of course, we wanted to walk away with the ESD title and placing behind Harrisburg by only one point stings, but I feel it will drive our practice next week.

“The team is looking forward to traveling to Rapid City for the state competition. I feel grateful our team is healthy and happy to be competing together this season.”

Brandon Valley (174.5) placed third.

Aberdeen Central (153.5), Mitchell (150.5), Watertown (146), Huron (146), Yankton (122.5) and Pierre (104.5) were fourth through ninth, respectively.

In dance, Harrisburg (267.25) upset Brandon Valley (260) for the crown.

Brookings was ninth at 204.75.

“We had two strong performances tonight,” said coach Brianna Vig. “The team worked hard the last week and a walk making changes to the choreography in both routines.

“We’ll continue to focus on growing the program and improving scores each week.”

The state competition is Saturday, Oct. 24, at Carold Heier Gymnasium in Rapid City.
