Bobcats (3-0) beat Sturgis 28-14 in first road game


STURGIS – The Bobcats picked up their third consecutive win to open the season, defeating Sturgis 28-14 on Friday in Woodle Field.

Matt Girard ran for 166 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Quarterback Tanner Shepardson opened the scoring with a 5-yard touchdown run at the 6:41 mark of the second quarter. Payton Theodosopoulos converted the first of four successful PAT kicks to make it 7-0.

Girard set up a first-and-goal at the 5-yard-line with a 30-yard rush on Brookings’ next possession. He found the end zone from 4 yards with 3:39 before the half, pushing the margin to 14-0.

The Bobcats lost a fumble at the Scooper 7 on their first possession of the third quarter. However, they forced a punt and took over at the 33.

Parker Rykhus capped the short drive with a 3-yard TD run to put the visitors ahead 21-0.

Sturgis got on the board late in the third as Josh Fowler caught a 25-yard touchdown toss from Zach Shoun on fourth down. Brodie Eisenbraun’s kick cut the deficit to 21-7.

Girard later used a 34-yard run to move the ball to the 3-yard-line. He scored on the next play as Brookings grabbed a 28-7 cushion.

Sturgis’ Trevor Erlenbusch plunged to paydirt from a yard out with 5:52 showing on the clock. Eisenbraun’s boot provided for the final margin.

The Scoopers recovered an onside kick after that; however, back-to-back sacks halted the threat.

Carter Eidem did not play for the Bobcats.

Brookings (3-0) plays at Madison on Friday at 7 p.m. Sturgis (0-3) is host to Douglas.
