Bobcats crush Governors to win ESD title outright

BROOKINGS – One goal achieved.

The Bobcats downed Pierre, 8-0, in an Eastern South Dakota Conference boys' soccer match on Tuesday at Fishback Soccer Park.

That win pushed Brookings’ record to 7-4-1 on the season and an ESD mark of 7-0-1, giving the Bobcats the conference crown outright

“We played smart – we played together and we played smart,” said BHS head coach Steve Binkley. “We knew that they had a really tough defense that hadn’t given up much lately, so at some point in the match, it felt like we really broke their back and then really started putting in one (goal) in after the next.”

And the ESD title?

“That feels incredible – it’s an accomplishment and it means all of our guys are working hard every day – you saw it today on the field with some connections between the freshmen and the freshmen getting goals.

“That was awesome to see; we’re excited not just for this year, but the future for Brookings soccer.”

The ‘Cats got on the scoreboard when Junior Zokou found the back of the net off a Keegan Fields setup in the 13th minute.

Daniyil Potapenko put back a rebound with 9:05 to play in the half, and then, Fields sent Brookings into the intermission up three goals off Gabel Goldhorn’s assist.

The Bobcats poured it on in the second half as Potapenko notched his second goal of the match less than five minutes in as Michael Kindvall picked up the helper.

Two minutes later, Zokou scored again, with the assist going to Fields, to make it 5-0.

Edwin Carillo scored back-to-back goals less than three minutes apart – the first set up by Carter Johnson and the second unassisted – before Kohji Numata provided for the final margin off a Vini Fornari assist with 14:15 left on the clock.

The Bobcats finished the night as the eighth seed in the standings with 41.375 seed points, but ninth-seeded Aberdeen Central (6-3-2 with 41.364 seed points) plays host to Mitchell (2-9-1) on Thursday at Swisher Field.

Tenth-seeded Watertown (5-4-2/40.364) has a home match with No. 11 seed Huron (6-4-1/40.318) at Anza Field, as well.

Official postseason pairings will be announced Friday morning.
