Bobcats finish seventh in ESD; Arrows win

BROOKINGS – Watertown claimed five singles titles and one doubles crown en route to claiming the Eastern South Dakota Conference girls’ tennis team title on Thursday at the Hillcrest Courts.

The Arrows totaled 342 points as Brandon Valley placed second with 268. Mitchell was third with 221, followed by Aberdeen Central (191), Yankton (147), Harrisburg (31), Brookings (20), Pierre (12) and Huron (7).

In singles action, Brandon Valley’s Tanna Lehfeldt downed Megan Fannin of Watertown, 10-6, at No. 1.

The Arrows won the rest of the flights as Megan Hauger beat Yankton’s Maggie Schaefer, 10-2, at No. 2; Abbi Cummings won 10-4 over the Lynx’ Sydney Pelletier, 10-4, at No. 3; Mackenzie McClemans bested Michaela Jerke of Brandon Valley, 10-5, at No. 4; Raeanna Zink won 10-2 over the Kernels’ Atlanta Stahle, 10-2, at No. 5; and Sadie Moran doubled up Mitchell’s Olivia Huber, 10-5, at No. 6.

In doubles, Brandon Valley’s Lehfeldt and Pelletier beat Central’s Mirra Frohling and Olivia Goetz, 10-6, at No. 1. In No. 2 doubles, the Arrows’ Hauger and McClemans posted a 10-6 win over Kiersten Bathke and Madison Bohlen of Mitchell, 10-6. Aberdeen Central’s Emily Ringgenberg and Megan Thone got past the Kernels’ Amber Moller and Atlanta Stahle, 10-6, for the No. 3 championship.

Scoring team points for the Bobcats in singles action was Abby Enevoldsen at No. 2 singles as the senior lost her first match to Mitchell’s Kelsey Dahme, 10-2,  before bouncing back with an 8-1 win over Pierre’s Carissa Ott. Enevoldsen’s ESD run ended with an 8-1 loss to Annabelle Schultz of Brandon Valley in the consolation championship.

Enevoldsen teamed with classmate Jane Ardry to tally points in No. 1 doubles. The Bobcat duo fell 10-3 to Mitchell’s Avery Larson and Kiersten Dahme; beat Audrey Rubish and Kayla Harvey of Huron, 8-6, but fell 8-5 to the Arrows’ Cummings and Fannin.

Marina Du and Tristina Ting won 10-3 over Huron’s Engelhart and Lord in the No. 2 doubles play-in match; were shut out, 10-0, by Bathke and Bohlen in the consolation bracket; beat Schaefer and Peyton Tramp of Yankton, 9-7, in the consolation bracket; and then, dropped a 9-7 decision to Kara Weiss and Tedrow of Pierre in the consolation championship match.

Next up for the Bobcats is the State Girls’ Tennis Tournament to be held in Rapid City. Play begins on Thursday and runs through Saturday.
