Bobcats outlast Jacks

BOZEMAN, Mont. – Montana State closed the game on a 9-2 run to defeat South Dakota State in a nonconference men’s basketball game Thursday night.

Harald Frey made a pair of free throws with 2 minutes to play to make it 70-68 and Amin Adamu did the same with 1:34 remaining.

The Jackrabbits’ David Wingett buried a jumper with 49 seconds left, cutting the deficit to 72-70.

Mychael Paulo, who scored 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting in 10 minutes off the bench, knocked down a 3-pointer with 24 seconds left to put the Bobcats ahead 75-70. Paulo’s dunk with 11 seconds to play provided for the final margin.

MSU shot 49.1 percent (28-of-57) from the field and SDSU ended up at 41.9 percent (26-of-62).

Frey paced the Bobcats with 23 points, five assists and a trio of steals. Adamu added 19 points and Ladan Ricketts 11. Devin Kirby grabbed 15 rebounds, while Jubrile Belo totaled nine points, six boards and four blocked shots.

For the Jackrabbits, Douglas Wilson finished with 16 points and nine boards.

Reserves Tray Buchanan and Wingett added 15 and 13 points, respectively.

Montana State (6-3) was up 40-39 at halftime and led by as many as 10 points – 51-41 – with 15:26 showing on the clock.

SDSU countered with a 21-8 run to grab a 62-59 advantage with 6:37 remaining.

South Dakota State (6-5) plays at Colorado State on Tuesday at 8 p.m. CT. in its final nonconference road game.
