Bobcats place 3rd at Region 1A Tournament; send 8 to State

DELL RAPIDS – Eight Bobcats qualified for state, including first-place finisher Jacob Schoon, at the Region 1A Wrestling Tournament on Saturday.

Watertown won the team title with 207.5 points; Madison was second at 130.5; and Brookings (120) placed third.

Nolan Archer (106 pounds), Gus Miller (220) and Tucker Christie (285) each placed second.

Connor Klinkhammer (113 pounds), Koby Bartels (126), Sam Lehman (138) and Logan Bowes (160) added third-place showings.

Schoon flew to the title in the 170-pound weight class.

The junior and five-time state qualifier received a bye in the quarterfinals and pinned West Central’s Kadyn Nolz in 2:54 in the semifinals.

Schoon picked up a 6-1 decision over Sioux Falls O’Gorman’s Zach Witte in the title bout.

Archer posted back-to-back 7-6 decisions against O’Gorman’s Nate Sprenkle and Dell Rapids’ Jacob Vogel to reach the final, where he medically forfeited to the Arrows’ Ty Althoff.

Miller pinned his way into the championship, dropping Sioux Falls Roosevelt’s Zane Wilson in 5:20 and then putting Dell Rapids’ Ben Cavigielli on his back in 6:49 for a sudden victory.

Watertown’s Lincoln Stahl edged Miller 3-2 in the final.

Christie followed up a bye with a 6-1 decision over OG’s Kenley Lamberty in the semis.

Rough Rider Caleb Dagel picked up a 3-1 sudden victory over Christie in the title match.

Klinkhammer pinned quarterfinal opponent Trevor Welch, of Tea Area, in 36 seconds but fell 4-3 to Dell Rapids’ Canyon Lowman in the semifinals. Klinkhammer bounced back with a 12-4 major decision against Watertown’s Ben Althoff in the consolation semifinals to punch his ticket to state and closed out the day by taking third with a 6-4 decision versus Madison’s Sam Olson.

Bartels bounced back from an 8-3 quarterfinal loss to West Central’s Landy Knight. Following a bye, he edged Dell Rapids’ Zach McKee, 4-3, to qualify for state and then toppled Roosevelt’s Dan Momotic, 9-5, to take third.

Lehman opened with a 17-6 major decision over Roosevelt’s DeShawn Jackson but fell 10-7 to West Central’s Caden Ideker in the semis. Lehman advanced to state with an 11-4 decision versus Dell Rapids’ Brayden Gee in the consolation semis and polished off his third-place showing with a 7-2 decision over Watertown’s Grant Wirkus.

Bowes pinned Rough Rider Alex Nelson in 1:34 in the quarters and dropped a 13-5 major decision to Watertown’s Sam Stroup in the semis. He pinned Dell Rapids’ Trystan Stahl in 1:17 to earn a state tourney appearance, before winning by fall in 2:48 versus Tea Area’s JT Panning in the third-place match.

Jaxon Bowes (120 pounds) and Caden Wright (145) both ended up 1-2 and Jacob Montis (132) went 0-2 as all three wrestlers lost in the consolation semifinals, one win away from a state tourney berth.

Bowes fell 4-0 to Roosevelt’s Eli Leonhardt in the match to advance to state, while Wright was pinned in 1:44 by Madison’s Ethan Buskness and Montis was pinned in 4:59 by Dell Rapids’ Max Lamer.

Aaron Smidt (182 pounds) finished 0-2.

Brookings was open at 113 and 195.

The Class A State Wrestling Tournament is Friday and Saturday at the PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls.
