VALLEY SPRINGS – The Bobcats spotted Brandon Valley three runs in the first inning and then rallied late to come away with a 5-3 win in Friday-night high school baseball action.

The Lynx took advantage of a leadoff walk and a hit batter two batters later, followed by a pair of singles, to plate their three runs in the opening frame.

Brandon Valley threatened again in the third, but the final out was recorded when the runner from third was called out for leaving too early on a tagup attempt on a yball out to Caden Wright in left field.

Brookings got off the schneid in the sixth with a leadoff home run by Tanner Shepardson to make it 3-1.

In the top of the seventh, back-to-back walks to Wright and Brock Luze set the table for Tyler Kreutner’s RBI single which put runners on the corners as Wright scored and Luze stopped at third.

Another single by Shepardson plated Luze to tie the game at 3-3; and then, a wild pitch moved Kreutner to third and Shepardson into scoring position at second.

Justin Devine’s sac fly to center scored Kreutner to give the ‘Cats a 4-3 lead before Parker Rykhus doubled to left to drive in Shepardson with an insurance run.

Rhett Zelinsky got the first two outs in the bottom of the seventh on a groundout and strikeout, but had leave the game due to the pitch count.

Luze walked the first batter he faced on four straight pitches and then struck out the next batter looking to earn the save as Brookings picked up the 5-3 win.

Zelinsky got the win after giving up three earned runs on two hits and three walks with eight strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings. Luze walked one and struck out one in his 1/3 inning of relief.

Brookings improved to 3-10 overall while the Lynx dropped to 14-6 on the season.

The Bobcats play host to 0-6 Douglas on Sunday in a double-header that starts at 11 a.m. at Bob Shelden Field.

On Monday, Brookings plays host to Harrisburg in a single game that is scheduled for 6 p.m.
