BROOKINGS – A pair of 41-year-olds paced the field for the Longest Day 10K on Saturday at Fishback Soccer Complex in Brookings.

Getting the longest day of the year off to a fast start were Tyler Boltjes, of Beresford, (34:14) and Tim Fryer, of Hendricks, Minnestota, (35:52). Fryer was the two-time defending champ and improved his time in 2020, but couldn’t catch Boltjes.

Third place went to former South Dakota State runner Luke Leischner, 30, of Rapid City, with a time of 37:35.

The course record of 32:41 was set by Rich Skorchzewski in 2010.

Sammy Voeltz, 22, of Crooks, was the first-place female and finished 11th overall with a time of 45:09. She was followed by Jaixai Reineke, 15, of Brookings, 13th overall, 46:23; and Leeann Diercks, 31, of Brookings, 14th overall, 48:39.

Ramsay Fitzsimmons set the course mark in 2009 with a time of 39:08.

There were 23 finishers in the 6.2-mile race sponsored by Prairie Striders Running Club and directed by Chris Gruenhagen. It was the first road race in Brookings since October.

The club’s next event is the Beef and Eggs 5K on July 11.
