Bombers Black beat Tri-Valley, Pierre in Cubby’s Tournament

BROOKINGS – The Bombers Black stayed hot with a pair of pool-play wins on Friday in the Cubby’s 14U Tournament held at Bob Shelden Field.

Brookings beat Tri-Valley, 13-2, to open the day and then closed out with an 11-5 win over Pierre.

Black closes pool play today at Shelden with a 9 a.m. game against Renner before facing the Sioux Falls Cylcones at 6 p.m.

Sunday’s matchups are determined by Saturday’s results.

• Brookings 13, Tri-Valley 2

Leading 1-0, Black sent 12 batters to the plate in the second to score eight runs as they cruised to the run-rule win.

Brookings took advantage of two hit batsmen, four walks, a Tri-Valley error and three hits – a leadoff single by Lincoln Hardin; an RBI single by Caden Krogman; and then an RBI double by Hardin in his second at-bat of the frame.

Black tacked on three more runs in the third after a pair of two-out walks, followed by an RBI double by Trey Svennes and an RBI single by Ashton Witte.

Hardin singled to lead off the fourth and eventually scored on Sam Hardin’s ground-ball out to make it 13-1 before Tri-Valley added a run in the top of the fifth for the final margin.

Sam Hardin picked up the win on the mound after allowing just two hits with a strike-out in three innings of work. Kaden Jewett tossed the last two frames and gave up two runs – one earned – on two hits and two walks.

Black got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first after Svennes reached on a base hit and later scored on Jake Amman’s sacrifice fly to center field.

But it was the second inning where Brookings took control when the Bombers batted around and plated six runs for a 7-0 lead through two.

After a Pierre elding error, Krogman doubled to score Payton Theodosopoulos before Krogman scored on Isac Norgaard’s sacrifice fly. Svennes’s two-run double sent Josh Devine and Jewett home and then Svennes scored on Witte’s sac fly. Ammann walked and eventually scored on Lincoln Hardin’s RBI single for the seven-run lead.

Pierre did get three back in the top of the third, but the Bombers added single runs in both the third and fourth. Krogman walked with one out in the third; stole second and then scored on Jewett’s RBI single while Witte scored on Lincoln Hardin’s double in the fourth after reaching on an error.

Post 8 put up two runs in the top of the fifth, but Black answered in the bottom of the sixth when Svennes walked; Witte reached on an error; and then both scored on Ammann’s two-run double to make it 11-5.

Lincoln Hardin earned the win after surrendering five earned runs on eight hits and a walk with two strikeouts over five innings. Devine went the final two frames – walking one and striking out two.
