Bombers Black goes 1-2

ABERDEEN – The Brookings Bombers Black team, Brookings’ 14U baseball team, went 1-2 at the State Tournament this weekend. They won their first game of pool play and then lost the next two and were knocked out of the tournament.

Friday

 Brookings 7, Brandon Valley 4

Brookings scored three runs in the bottom of sixth inning to break a tie and get the win.

Brandon Valley scored a run and held Brookings scoreless in the bottom of the inning. Neither team scored in the second inning and the Bombers scored a run in the bottom of the third. Nolan Miles scored on a ground out to tie the game 1-1. 

Brandon Valley struck for three runs in the top of the fifth. Brookings responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Addison Ronning hit an RBI single. Jacob Khale then hit a two-run single to tie the game 4-4.

The Bombers held Brandon Valley scoreless in the top of the sixth and scored three runs in the bottom of the inning. Sam Johnson scored on an error and Breck Hirrschoff scored on a wild pitch. Ronning then hit an RBI single to make it 7-4. Brandon Valley got a man on base in the top of the seventh, but were unable to score.

Owen Schneider had three RBI’s. Khale went 1-for-1 with two RBI’s. Griffen Bartels was awarded the win after pitching a complete game. He gave up four runs, one earned on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

Saturday

 Renner 12, Brookings 2 (5 inn.)

Renner used a seven run fifth inning to go up 10 runs and end the game because of the 10-run rule.

Renner scored one run in each of the first two innings. They then scored two runs in the third and one run in the fourth to make it 5-0. Brookings scored two runs in the top of the fifth. Hirrschoff hit a two-run triple to make it 5-2.

Rener struck for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth so the game ended. Hirrschoff went 2-for-3 with two RBI’s. Austin Clark picked up the loss for Brookings after pitching four and two thirds innings. He gave up 11 runs, five earned on eight hits. He struck out one batter and walked five.

 Yankton 13, Brookings 8

Brookings saw a comeback come up short as they fell to Yankton and were eliminated from the tournament.

Yankton scored one run in the top of the first. Brookings tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. Jack Merritt hit a sacrifice fly to make it 1-1. Yankton scored three runs in the top of the third. Brookings responded with one run in the bottom of the inning on a Breck Hirrschoff single to make it 4-2.

Yankton scored two more runs in the top of the fourth and two runs in the top of the fifth to make it 8-2. Brookings scored a run in the bottom of the fifth on an error to make it 8-3. Yankton scored four more runs in the top of the sixth to make it 12-3. Brookings responded with one run in the bottom of the inning to make it 12-4, but Yankton scored one run in the top of the seventh to make it 13-4.

Brookings scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to score any more. 

Hirrschoff went 2-for-3 with three RBI’s. Merritt had two RBI’s and Bartels had one. Hirrschoff was awarded the loss after pitching the first four innings. He gave up six earned runs on six hits. He struck out three batters and walked five.
