Bombers Black pick up a pair of wins

BROOKINGS – The Bombers Black scored 38 runs while picking up a pair of wins to conclude the Cubby’s Sports Bar & Grill Classic.

Brookings beat Renner 20-0 in four innings on Sunday and West Central 18-16 on Saturday to finish with a 2-2 record in the 14U division.

The Bombers Black (9-7) are host to Brandon Valley for a doubleheader Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Sunday

 Brookings 20, Renner 0 (4 inn.)

Justin Cofell pitched a three-hit shutout and the Bombers Black broke open the game with 18 runs in the fourth frame. He struck out six and walked a pair.

Brookings totaled seven hits and took advantage of 15 walks and five hit batsmen.

Cofell went 3-for-4 with a double and five RBIs to pace the offense.

Trenton Pederson singled and drove in three runs.

Tyson Brandt (two hits), Nathan Lease (one hit), Parker Winghart, Rocklyn Dauphinais and Carter Wright each tallied two RBIs. Zach Struck and Matt Nordmeyer also drove in runs.

Brandt, Dauphinais, Wright and Nordmeyer each scored three times. Wright drew a trio of walks, while Pederson, Brandt, Dauphinais, Lease and Winghart each walked twice. Nordmeyer was hit by a pitch three times.

Saturday

 Brookings 18, West Central 16

The teams exchanged big innings, with the Bombers Black taking the lead for good with six runs in the top of the seventh.

The Trojans scored eight times in the fifth to move ahead 15-12. Brookings put up a seven-spot in the second.

Brandt finished 4-for-6 with a double and three RBIs.

Cofell was 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs. Jaxton Eck went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Pederson (two walks) and Winghart both singled and drove in two runs.

Nordmeyer added a hit and an RBI while scoring three times. Struck and Andrew Bishop drove in runs. Seven different Bombers scored two runs.

Isaac Schulte earned the pitching win in relief, allowing one run – unearned – on two hits over the final 2 2/3 innings.
