Bombers Black split with S.F. East

BROOKINGS – The Bombers Black and Sioux Falls East 14U split a youth baseball doubleheader Tuesday evening at Mickelson Field.

Brookings (12-7) competes in the Cubby’s Sports Bar & Grill 14U Wood Bat Tournament on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Game 1

• Brookings 9, Sioux Falls East 8 (8 inn.)

Maxwell Kjelden scored the winning run as the Bombers Black rallied to take the opener.

Kjelden led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and Jamison Honkomp was then hit by a pitch. Kyle Bauer’s sacrifice bunt moved the runners up.

With two outs, Wesley Koenig reached on a dropped third strike as Kjelden sprinted home to end the game.

Sioux Falls East scored one run in the fifth and two in the seventh to grab an 8-5 advantage.

Bauer sparked a rally in the bottom of the seventh with a one-out single and quickly moved to third on a wild pitch. Mason Bebensee reached on an error, which allowed Bauer to score to cut the deficit to 8-6.

Max Struck and Cole Mahlum were hit by pitches to load the bases. Koenig hit a hard groundball with two outs, and an error allowed Bebensee and Struck to score to pull Brookings even at 8-all.

Struck finished with two RBIs. Bauer went 2-for-4 and scored twice.

Ten different players in the Bombers Black lineup recorded at least one hit.

Kjelden pitched the final two innings to earn the win.

Game 2

• Sioux Falls East 10, Brookings 2

Nick Lounsbery pitched three shutout innings, allowing just one hit, and was one of three Sioux Falls East batters to tally two RBIs as the visitors salvaged a split.

Sioux Falls East built a 5-0 lead through 3 1/2 innings and put up a four spot in the seventh to seal the deal.

Braiden Heiden recorded two of East’s six doubles.

Brookings’ Nick Schefers finished 2-for-3. Jackson Krogman had an RBI. Honkomp and Reid Brettschneider both singled.

Cole Mahlum threw two innings while taking the loss.
