Bombers Black take 2nd in regional

PIERRE – The Bombers Black went 1-1 at the South Dakota A Baseball U14 Region 2 Tournament on Thursday at Hyde Stadium to finish second.

Brookings fell 11-4 to the Watertown Black Sox in the championship game but toppled Mitchell Black 12-11 in 13 innings in the second-place matchup.

The top four teams from the region advanced to the state tournament, to be held Wednesday, Aug. 2, through Sunday, Aug. 6, in Brookings.

Second place

• Brookings 12, Mitchell Black 11 (13 inn.)

Kyle Bauer came through with a walkoff single with one out in the 13th as the Bombers Black prevailed.

Brookings led 5-0 through two innings; however, Mitchell put up seven runs in the third and was ahead 10-9 through four frames.

Max Struck’s two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh plated Cole Mahlum to tie the score at 10-all and force extra innings.

Mitchell scored a run in the top of the eighth.

Bauer answered in the bottom of the inning as his sacrifice fly drove in Jamison Honkomp to make it 11-11.

In the 13th, Mason Bebensee singled, stole second and moved to third on Maxwell Kjelden’s sacrifice bunt to set the stage for Bauer, who lined a single to center to seal the deal.

Jackson Krogman went 3-for-5 with a triple, a walk, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Bauer was 2-for-4 with four RBIs.

Struck had two hits and two RBIs. Bebensee finished with two hits, including a double, and one RBI.

Honkomp added an RBI and two runs scored.

Noah Beyer doubled. Mahlum and Reid Brettschneider both singled. Mahlum and Henry Hammrich both scored twice.

Bebensee, the last of six Brookings pitchers, threw three scoreless innings to pick up the win, giving up just two hits and a pair of walks. Krogman pitched two hitless innings with a pair of strikeouts prior to Bebensee taking the mound.

Championship

The Black Sox broke away from a 2-all tie with three runs in the bottom of the third and then added four more in the fifth to move ahead 9-3 en route to the victory.

Braxton Lacher finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Watertown. Nate Lear also drove in a pair of runs.

Mason Evans, who tripled, and Lexan Thorson both totaled two hits and an RBI. Parker Reed tripled and tallied an RBI. Mason Stoick and Logan McKeever had the team’s other RBIs.

Four different Black Sox scored twice.

Zach Hirsch earned the pitching win after giving up four runs – two earned – on five hits and four walks with four strikeouts over six innings.

Brookings’ Jamison Honkomp went 2-for-4 with a run batted in. Jackson Krogman was 2-for-3.

Cole Mahlum, who doubled, and Maxwell Kjelden, who singled, both contributed an RBI.

Krogman, Mahlum, Kjelden and Henry Hammrich each scored a run.

Mason Bebensee allowed five runs on four hits and three walks with one strikeout in three innings to take the loss.
