Bombers Black win Coke Tournament


WATERTOWN – The Bombers Black scored 37 runs in three games to post a 3-0 mark at the 2018 14U Coke Tournament over the weekend.

Black downed Sioux Falls East, 15-5, in Saturday’s opening pool-play game before beating Aberdeen, 11-7, to close out the day.

In Sunday’s title match, Brookings put up six runs in the first frame on the way to an 11-2 trouncing of West Central.

On Wednesday, Black plays host to Brandon Valley in a doubleheader at Mickelson Field that starts at 4 p.m.

Sunday’s Championship

Black laid the lumber to open the game as Trey Svennes drew a leadoff walk and later scored on Ashton Witte’s RBI-triple. Back-to-back doubles by Jake Ammann and Talon Richter plated Witte and Ammann before Richter scored on Payton Theodosopoulos’ RBI single.

Lincoln Hardin, Theodosopoulos and Caden Krogman also scored in the first as Brookings took advantage of a pair of West Central errors.

In the top of the second, Svennes singled; stole second; advanced to third on a ground out; and then, scored on a passed ball to make it 7-0 after 1 1/2 innings.

West Central responded with two in the bottom of the frame, but Black put the game away with a four-run fifth.

Ammann singled; stole second and scored on Hardin’s double before Brookings took advantage of a hit batter and a walk to plate Richter for a 9-2 lead. A fielder’s choice plated Hardin and then, Theodosopoulos scored on Isac Norggard’s RBI single for the 11-2 advantage.

Sam Hardin earned the win on the mound after allowing two runs – one earned – on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts in two innings of work. Richter tossed the final four frames and gave up two hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

Saturday’s Games

 Brookings 11, Aberdeen 7

Both teams plated four runs apiece in the first inning as Svennes led off with a single, stole second and scored on a Witte RBI-triple. Witte eventually scored after being forced in on a base on balls before Ammann scored on Lincoln Hardin’s sacrifice fly and Richter later scored on a wild pitch.

Witte reached on a fielder’s choice in the second and scored on Ammann’s RBI single to give Black a short-lived 5-4 lead as Aberdeen tied the game with a single run in the third.

Brookings got the bats going again in the fourth as Ethan Molengraaf singled with one out before Sam Hardin drew a walk. Back-to-back singles by Svennes and Witte plated Molengraaf as Hardin, Svennes and Witte scored on Ammann’s bases-clearing double to center for a 9-5 edge.

After Aberdeen put up a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, Black tallied a pair of insurance runs in the fifth when Theodosopoulos singled and Krogman drew a walk to set up a two-RBI single by Svennes.

Svennes tossed 3 2/3 frames to earn the win after giving up seven runs – four earned – on seven hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Ammann picked up the save after allowing a hit and a walk with a strikeout in 1 1/3 innings of relief.

Josh Devine drew a leadoff walk and manufactured a run in the bottom of the first to tie the game at a run apiece after one.

East put up four in the top of the second but Black responded with seven in their half of the frame to take control as they added two in the third and five in the fifth en route to the 15-6 win.

Devine allowed five runs – three earned – one five hits and two walks with two strikeouts in an inning of work.

Krogman was credited with the win after giving up one earned run on three hits and a walk with two strikeouts over the final three innings.

Brookings took advantage of 12 walks as Sam Hardin singled and doubled for a three-RBI performance while Isac Norgaard tacked on a triple.
