Bombers Gray split with Mitchell

BROOKINGS – The Bombers Gray took the first game from Mitchell, 7-6, but fell in Game 2, 17-2, on Friday at Mickelson Field.

Brookings takes on Sioux Falls West on Monday in a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Harmodon.

Gray plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally to the win over Mitchell.

After Mitchell scored in the first, Brookings answered with a run to tie the game.

Brayton Mack took one for the team; stole second; moved to third on Braden Clifford’s groundball out; and then scored on Isac Norgaard’s single.

The visitors scored twice in the second and Gray responded with one in the third when Keiji Numata drew a one-out walk; moved to second on a Mitchell error; advanced to third on Clifford’s single; and then scored on Norgaard’s flyout to left.

Mitchell scored two runs in the fifth, but Brookings matched it with two in its half.

Gavin Fixsen reached on an error and moved to second on Numata’s base hit. Mack’s groundout allowed Fixsen to score and Numata to advance to third, before he scored on a Norgaard double to make it 5-4.

After Mitchell added an insurance run in the top of the sixth, Gray took advantage of two hit batters, three walks and a base hit to score three runs and pull out the win.

Logan Stotz took one for the team before Matthew Weelborg and Fixsen drew back-to-back walks with one out. Numata plated Stotz with his second hit of the game before Weelborg scored when Mack took another one for the team. Clifford’s bases-loaded walk forced in Fixsen for the win.

Numata earned the win in relief of Clifford as Clifford gave up three runs – one earned – on five walks with five strikeouts over 4 1/3 frames. Numata allowed three runs – one earned – on two hits and a walk with a strikeout in 1 2/3.

The visitors scored early and often in a run-shortened nightcap to secure the sweep.

Stotz suffered the loss after giving up 17 runs – 10 earned – one nine hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

Anthony Hildebrandt allowed one hit in relief.

Gray got on the board in the first when Numata reached on an error; stole second; and scored on Clifford’s one-out hit to right.

In the third, Numata scored the second run after drawing a walk; advancing to second when Mack was hit by a pitch; stealing third and scoring on a Mitchell error.
