Bombers Maroon reach 20-win mark with sweep

BROOKINGS – The Bombers Maroon swept Harrisburg in a youth baseball doubleheader Monday evening at Mickelson Field, winning 2-1 and 9-3.

Both games ended after six innings.

Brookings (20-4) returns to action at the Mid-Summer Classic, opening the tourney with a game against Sioux Falls West on Friday at noon at Harmodon in Sioux Falls.

Game 1

• Brookings 2, Harrisburg 1 (6 inn.)

Austin Clark tossed a four-hitter and Griffen Bartels and Owen Schneider drove in runs to lead the Bombers Maroon.

Clark allowed one run while striking out five batters and walking two.

Brookings scored both its runs in the second inning.

With one out, Cameron Girard was hit by a pitch and Will Bauer walked. Addison Ronning hit into a fielder’s choice, before David Brink loaded the bases with a two-out single.

Bartels came through with an RBI single and Schneider walked to force in Ronning.

Ronning doubled and Jack Merritt singled.

Game 2

 Brookings 9, Harrisburg 3 (6 inn.)

The Bombers Maroon took control with six runs in the fifth frame.

Breck Hirrschoff went 2-for-2 with a double, three RBIs and two runs.

Clark added a single and two RBIs. Schneider was 2-for-2 and scored twice.

Bartels also drove in a run and Girard contributed a hit.

Ronning earned the win after allowing two runs – one earned – on three hits and four walks with one strikeout in four innings.

Merritt notched the save, surrendering one run – unearned – on one hit and two walks with a strikeout in two innings.
