BROOKINGS – After letting the opening pool-play game get away from them in a 12-10 loss to Sioux Falls East, the Bombers Maroon took it out on West Central as they touched home 18 times in an 18-3 win to cap off Day 1 of the 13U Cubby’s Sports Bar & Grill Tournament action at Erv Heuther Field.

Bombers Maroon split on Day 1

BROOKINGS – After letting the opening pool-play game get away from them in a 12-10 loss to Sioux Falls East, the Bombers Maroon took it out on West Central as they touched home 18 times in an 18-3 win to cap off Day 1 of the 13U Cubby’s Sports Bar & Grill Tournament action at Erv Heuther Field.

Maroon has a rematch with West Central at 11 a.m. today in Championship Pool action at the Erv before facing West Lyon at 3:30 p.m. West Central and West Lyon face off at 1:15 p.m.

• Brookings 18, West Central 3

After spotting West Central a run in the top of the first, Maroon answered with 11 in their half and then tacked on seven more in the second to end the game early via the run rule.

Parker Winghart helped himself out with two hits – including a double – as he drove in three runs. Kellan Aure, Carter Wright, Justin Cofell, Nathan Lease and Andrew Bishop all had one hit and one RBI as the Bombers took advantage of 14 walks.

Winghart went the distance on the mound to earn the win after surrendering three earned runs on three hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

The Bombers built a 10-5 lead through ve innings before East plated six runs in the top of the sixth to pull out the win.

Justin Cofell led Maroon’s offense with two hits, which included a triple, along with two RBIs, while Matt Nordmeyer added a double and a run batted in.

Andrew Bishop had a hit and RBI while Winghart, Zach Struck and Max Enevoldsen added singles.

Struck suffered the loss in relief as he gave up three earned runs on two hits and a walk over the final two frames.

Davin Carlson surrendered nine runs – five earned – on 10 hits in the first five innings.
