Bombers Maroon split with Smitty’s

BROOKINGS – The Bombers Maroon dropped the first game of a doubleheader with the Aberdeen Smitty’s on Sunday before coming back to win Game 2 and earn a split.

Brookings fell 7-3 in Game 1, but bounced back for a 15-5 decision to finish its regular season with an 18-11 mark.

The Bombers led 3-1 through four complete before Aberdeen put up a six-spot in the fifth for the final scoring.

Trailing by a run heading into the bottom of the fourth, Matt Nordmeyer led off with a single before Max Enevoldsen connected with a one-out base hit.

Tyson Brandt walked to load the bases, and then, Kellan Aure’s fielder’s choice plated Nordmeyer to tie the game at 1-1.

Parker Winghart’s two-out, two-RBI double scored Brandt and Aure to give Maroon the 3-1 lead.

But the Smitty’s used a pair of hit batters, a walk and a Maroon error, along with three hits to push across six runs for the win.

Justin Cofell suffered the loss in relief as he gave up seven runs – one earned – on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts in two innings of work.

Winghart started and didn’t give up a run after issuing three walks and striking out seven over three innings.

Tyson Brandt allowed one hit in the sixth.

The Smitty’s put up two runs in each of the first two innings, and then, tacked on one in the third to lead 5-3 through 2 1/2 innings of play.

But the Bombers plated 12 runs in the bottom of the third to put the game away.

Enevoldsen drove in three runs with two base hits while Cofell and Nathan Lease matched that effort as Zach Struck drove in a run with a single.

Lease picked up the win after giving up five runs ¬on five hits and a base on balls, to go along with striking out one.

Dauphinais tossed 2/3 scoreless frames of relief as he struck out one.
