Bombers Maroon swept in doubleheader against Watertown

BROOKINGS – The Brookings Bombers Maroon 13U team was swept in a doubleheader against the Watertown Grey Sox on Thursday afternoon. The Grey Sox took the first game, 14-2, in five innings and then won game two, 11-3.

The Bombers are now 4-18 and play their next game on July 6, a doubleheader against Yankton. The first game is scheduled to start at noon.

Game One

 Watertown 14, Brookings 2 (5 inn.)

Watertown jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning and then scored four runs in both the fourth and fifth inning and won via the 10-run rule.

The Grey Sox scored the first two runs on a single and a ground out. They then scored two more runs on a single and the final two runs on a single and a passed ball.

Neither team scored in the second inning and Brookings would then get on the board with two runs in the third. The Bombers had the bases loaded with two outs after a pair of walks and a hit batter. Connor Jones then drew a walk to score one run and Parker Nielsen followed with a single to make it 6-2. 

Watertown scored their four runs in the fourth on three singles and a ground out. The Grey Sox then scored four more runs in the fifth on a single and three-run triple. Brookings then went down one-two-three and the game ended because of the 10-run rule.

Nielsen’s hit was the only hit for Brookings. Parker Witte started the game for the Bombers and pitched the first four innings. He gave up 14 runs, 13 earned, on 12 hits, with four walks and no strikeouts. Jaxon Voeltz-Huber pitched the final inning and gave up no runs on one hit, with two strikeouts.

Game Two

 Watertown 11, Brookings 3 (6 inn.)

Four runs in the third and three runs in the sixth put the nail in the coffin for Brookings in the second game.

Each team scored two runs in the first inning. Watertown got its two runs on an error and a passed ball. Witte hit a two-out double and later scored on a Cooper Schneider double. Tate Sonnenburg walked and then scored on a Jensen single. 

Watertown scored two more runs in the second. The first run came on a double and the next one came on a wild pitch to make it 4-2.

The four runs in the third for the Grey Sox came on a single and two fielder’s choice’s. Brookings was able to cut the lead to 8-3 in the bottom of the inning. Witte reached on an error and Cooper Schneider hit him home with a single.

Neither team scored in the fifth and Watertown pushed across three runs in the sixth. The Grey Sox scored their runs on a single and two-run home run. The game then ended because of time.

Schneider was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Jensen was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Witte was 1-for-3 and Sonnenburg and Camden Reicks were each 1-for-2.

Nielsen pitched the first two innings for Brookings and gave up eight runs, seven earned, on five hits, with five walks and a strikeout. Jensen pitched the final four innings and gave up three earned runs on three hits, with a walk and no strikeouts.
