Bombers Maroon win 13U title

VOLGA – The Bombers Maroon won both games in the championship pool at Hoff Field on Saturday as they beat Volga, 17-7, before knocking off Brandon Valley, 10-7, to win the 13U division of the Cubby’s Sports Bar and Grill Wood Bat Tournament.

Maroon, 13-3 on the season, play host to Sioux Falls West in a Tuesday doubleheader that starts at 4 p.m. at Mickelson Field.

• Brookings 17, Volga 7

Brock Longville drove in four runs on three hits – a single, double and triple – and Trey Svennes had a pair of single and three RBIs as the Bombers ended the game early via the run rule.

Brookings put up 11 runs in the first and then scored two more in the second, fourth and fifth innings for the win.

Jake Ammann added a single and double with an RBI while Caden Krogman notched two base hits with a run batted in.

Svennes earned the win as he gave up three runs on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts in four innings of work. Kaden Jewett tossed the fifth and allowed four runs – two earned – on two hits and a walk with one strikeout.

Kashas VanderWal’s three hits led Volga as Caleb Elijah hit a double and Parker Puetz hit a triple.

Alec Bultje suffered the loss after giving up 11 runs – seven earned – on four hits and five walks with one strikeout.

Aidan Tisdall allowed two runs on three hits and three walks in 2 2/3 innings while Connor Logan threw the final 1 1/3 frames – giving up four runs on two hits and six walks with a strikeout.

Brandon Valley jumped out with a pair of runs in the top of the first but the Bombers answered with four of their own in the bottom and built their lead to 5-2 through three.

When the visitors scored five in the fourth, Maroon responded with two in the bottom of the frame to tie it back up at 7-7 and then came back with three in the fifth for the final margin.

Seven different players had a hit for Brookings as Zachary Moe, Ashton Witte and Longville each had two, with Witte and Longville notching a pair of RBIs apiece.

Payton Theodosopoulos, Svennes and Jack Even had a hit and run batted in while Ammann added a single and picked up the win in relief.

Cole McKeown went 3 1/3 innings and gave up six runs – five earned – on one hit and six walks.

Amman threw the final 3 2/3, allowing one unearned run on one hit and five walks with three strikeouts.
