Bombers Maroon win Coke Tournament

WATERTOWN – The Bombers Maroon went 4-0 to win the 13U division of the Coke Tournament over the weekend at the Foundation Fields.

They dropped Lake Norden 9-0 in six innings and Harrisburg Black 10-0 in four innings on Sunday. Brookings beat a pair of Watertown teams Saturday, topping the White Sox 8-4 in five innings and the Grey Sox 2-1 in six innings.

All games were scheduled for six innings.

The Bombers Maroon (7-1) play a doubleheader at Sioux Falls West on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Owen Schneider (three innings), David Brink (two) and Tate Helmbolt (one) combined on a three-hit shutout and the Bombers Maroon offense provided plenty of run support.

Schneider allowed two hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Brink gave up one hit while striking out two batters and walking one.

Austin Clark went 3-for-3 at the plate. Nolan Miles was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored. Jack Merritt finished 2-for-3.

Brink, Helmbolt and Addison Ronning each contributed a hit and an RBI. Breck Hirrschoff had the team’s other hit and also scored three times.

The Bombers Maroon totaled 11 hits and had 10 free passes, including seven walks.

Ronning tossed a two-hit shutout, striking out three batters and walking one.

The Bombers Maroon sandwiched two-run innings around a six-run second frame.

Miles highlighted the big inning with a two-run single, as he finished with three RBIs.

Hirrschoff singled, drove in a pair of runs and scored twice. Clark added an RBI single.

Brookings drew 11 free passes, including 10 walks.

Ronning, Schneider (three walks) and Cameron Girard (two walks) each scored two runs.

The Bombers Maroon racked up 12 hits in the win. They led 6-0 after 2 1/2 innings.

Merritt went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and also earned the pitching win after throwing two innings of one-hit ball with a strikeout and a walk.

Girard also finished 3-for-3 while adding one RBI. Schneider had two hits, drove in a run and scored twice.

Hirrschoff had an RBI triple. He was hit by a pitch twice and scored three runs.

Miles drove in a run. Clark, Brink and Ronning each added a hit.

Girard allowed three runs – two earned – on two hits and five walks in two innings. Clark tossed the fifth, surrendering one run on one hit and three walks with one strikeout.

The White Sox’s Owen Spartz went 1-for-1 with two walks and a pair of RBIs.

Hirrschoff outdueled Marcus Rabine on the mound and the Bombers Maroon pushed across the go-ahead run in the top of the fourth inning.

Hirrschoff allowed one run on four hits and two walks with one strikeout.

Rabine gave up two runs on just one hit with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Hirrschoff drew a one-out walk in the fourth and proceeded to steal second and third. He scored on Merrit’s groundout to short.

Brookings opened the scoring in the second as Merritt singled – the team’s lone hit – stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and then sprinted home on another wild pitch. Those were the only two wild pitches in the game.

The Grey Sox’s Mason Krause singled to open the bottom of the second. He advanced to second on Carter Beynon’s sacrifice and, after Jackson Maag singled, scored on a double steal.

The Bombers Maroon drew four free passes, including three walks.
