SIOUX FALLS – After two dominant relief performances in a series win at Omaha, South Dakota State’s Ryan Bourassa was honored Monday as TicketSmarter Summit League Pitcher of the Week.
A junior from West Fargo, North Dakota, Bourassa struck out 11 batters in only four innings of work in closing out both Jackrabbit victories. In the May 6 series opener, he earned the save by pitching three shutout innings with eight strikeouts. Bourassa again struck out the side in the ninth inning of the May 8 series finale to preserve an 8-3 Jackrabbit victory. Over his two appearances, Bourassa allowed one hit and one walk.
For the season, Bourassa has struck out 55 batters in 34 2/3 innings. That translates to 14.28 strikeouts per nine innings pitched, which would better the single-season mark of 13.82 he established a season ago.
With its two wins this past weekend, South Dakota State moved closer to securing a spot in the four-team Summit League Baseball Championship later this month. The Jackrabbits, 18-19 overall and 9-7 in league play, open a three-game home series against league newcomer St. Thomas at 3 p.m. Friday.
