BPD: Juvenile steals vehicle

BROOKINGS – A female juvenile was apprehended by Brookings Police after she allegedly stole a vehicle in Minnesota, Assistant Chief Derrick Powers said.

Brookings Police were notified about 7:15 p.m. Monday by an agency in Minnesota about a runaway juvenile female who had stolen a vehicle and was possibly in the Brookings area, Powers said. He did not identify the agency in Minnesota.

“We were provided with information on the description of the vehicle,” he said. “Officers kept an eye out for it and were able to locate it shortly before 7:45 p.m. in the 500 block of 22nd Avenue South.

“When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver fled in the vehicle and we pursued the vehicle from that location,” Powers said.

After a short pursuit, the vehicle came to a stop on Bluegill Circle, after it came to a dead-end there, Powers said.

The juvenile female was taken into custody and transported to a juvenile facility in the Sioux Falls area. She is facing several charges in Brookings in relation to the pursuit, including aggravated eluding, Powers said. He’s not sure what charges she may be facing in Minnesota.

He said charging juveniles is different than charging adults. The fact that this juvenile is from another state complicates the process, he said.

If the juvenile is from somewhere else in South Dakota, “our state’s attorney would work with the state’s attorney in the county that the juvenile lived in and they’d go through the court system in that county. I don’t know if that works the same way in regard to across state lines,” Powers said.

The juvenile had no injuries, he said.

“(The stolen vehicle) had to be towed because it had a flat tire,” Powers said.
