BROOKINGS – A Brookings man was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault Thursday after police say he beat a woman and held a knife to her Wednesday afternoon.

Brookings Police were called at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday to a residence in the 700 block of Brooklawn Drive, where a 35-year-old Brookings woman had been assaulted, Assistant Chief Derrick Powers said.

When officers arrived, a suspect, a 39-year-old Brookings man, had left the area.

Several witnesses said that the man and woman, who were known to one another, had a verbal argument. Then the man allegedly struck and kicked the woman, Powers said.

The woman reported losing consciousness, and when she came to, the man allegedly continued kicking her and held a knife to her, Powers said.

An ambulance responded to the scene. The woman was not transported, but she did seek treatment for unknown injuries.

Investigators were unable to locate the man Wednesday, but he came to the police department Thursday. He was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault and transported to the Brookings County Detention Center.
