BROOKINGS – The Brookings Police is issuing a warning to the public after receiving reports of break-ins and attempted break-ins of vehicles this week.

One theft from a vehicle was reported at 9:19 a.m. Thursday and occurred in the 1000 block of Third Avenue, said Lt. Marci Gebers of the BPD’s criminal investigations division.

“The suspect or suspects threw a rock through the driver’s side window to gain access to that vehicle. A wallet and contents were stolen out of there,” she said.

The wallet was later turned in to the Brookings Police Department.

“We have no suspects at this time,” Gebers said.

She wanted to remind people to be cautious about what they leave in their vehicles.

“We’ve had a couple reports of damage to vehicles where it appears that someone may have been trying to gain entry into vehicles,” Gebers said.

One of those was reported at 9:14 a.m. Monday in the 2000 block of David Cove and included damage to the rubber seal that goes around the window.

The suspects didn’t gain entry into the vehicle and there was nothing taken, Gebers said.

Another report came in at 9:36 a.m. Wednesday and occurred in the 500 block of 12th Street South.

“Some of the tint was damaged on the window,” Gebers said. “In this case, (the contents of the car) were disturbed, but she did not notice anything was stolen. She also reported that she believed someone may have tried to gain access into her residence, (but was not successful).”
