Brewers beat Renner to advance to Class A title tilt; Ravens, Flying Squirrels eliminated

MITCHELL – The Sioux Falls Brewers advanced to the Class A State Amateur Baseball Tournament championship game with an 8-7 win over the Renner Monarchs in Friday’s undefeated game at Cadwell Park.

Brewers beat Renner to advance to Class A title tilt; Ravens, Flying Squirrels eliminated

MITCHELL – The Sioux Falls Brewers advanced to the Class A State Amateur Baseball Tournament championship game with an 8-7 win over the Renner Monarchs in Friday’s undefeated game at Cadwell Park.

In Friday’s elimination games at Drake Field, Aberdeen Circus Bar downed the Castlewood Ravens, 5-4, while Vermillion rolled over the Sioux Falls Squirrels, 14-5.

Aberdeen and Vermillion square off at 11 a.m. today with the winner moving on to face the Monarchs at 5:30 p.m.

The Brewers await the winner of the 5:30 matchup in the title game scheduled for noon on Sunday.

• S.F. Brewers 8, Renner 7

Renner broke a 5-5 tie with two runs in the top of the seventh inning, but the Brewers answered with three in the bottom of the frame en route to the 8-7 win in the undefeated game.

Tim Huber’s solo home run to lead off the second inning gave the Monarchs the early lead, but Sioux Falls came responded with a run in the bottom of the frame as Jesse Munsterman doubled and later scored on Tom Hill’s RBI single.

Two hit batters and a wild pitch set up Renner’s run in the second as Chaz Palmer scored on Eric DeJong’s ground-ball out.

James Borges had the big hit in the fourth – a two-run single – as the Brewers plated four to take a 5-2 advantage.

DeJong drove in two runs with a double in the fifth and David Brochardt hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Brian McGuire to tie the game at 5-5.

In the seventh, Chaz Palmer’s two-RBI double gave the Monarchs a two-run advantage, but Ian Strum connected on a two-out, three-run homer to put the Brewers back up, 8-7, which is where it ended.

Sam Lang picked up the win in relief after giving up two runs on five hits and four walks with three strikeouts over the final four innings.

Chris Kessinger tossed the first five and allowed five runs – four earned – on five hits and three walks with six strikeouts.

Derek Quame was saddled with the loss after being charged with the winning run after giving up the homer.

Ryan Pruitt started and allowed three runs on five hits and three walks with four strikeouts over the first three innings.

Brandon May threw 3 1/3 innings and gave up four runs on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

The Circus batted around in the top of the first inning – taking advantage of a leadoff error before stringing five straight singles together – to plate four runs.

Castlewood came right back in the bottom of the frame with three straight hits – a leadoff single by Carter Roach, followed by singles from Ryan Engels and Andy Turbak – to score a run.

The Ravens added a run in the fourth after Eric Danforth and Corey Roach sandwiched walks around pickup player Kyle Krogman getting hit by a pitch. Cole Julius earned the RBI with a groundout as Castlewood closed within 4-2.

Pickup player JaColby Anderson led off the eighth with a base hit for Aberdeen and moved to second on Tyler Newman’s base hit. A sacrifice bunt by Kelly Coates pushed both runners into scoring position before Zach Rierson’s sacrifice fly to right plater Anderson to make it 5-2.

The Circus ended up needing that run as Danforth doubled with one out in the bottom of the eighth and scored on Corey Roach’s two-out home run to pull the Ravens within 5-4.

Chad Ellingson earned the win after giving up four runs on eight hits and four walks with three strikeouts. Jesse Spangler struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth to pick up the save.

Danforth suffered the loss after allowing five runs – four earned – on 12 hits and a walk with eight strikeouts.

• Vermillion 14, S.F. Flying Squirrels 5

Blake Meechum and Kendall Hazel each hit a three-run home run in the top of the first inning to spot the Red Sox a 6-0 lead and Tyler Candor added a leadoff homer in the third and a two-run shot in the fourth as Vermillion cruised to the win over the Flying Squirrels.

Hazel and Meechum each added a double as Hazel drove in four runs and Meechum finished with three RBIs. Candor also drove in three runs while Robin Chute contributed three singles and two RBIs and Mike Callahan chipped in with a two-base hit.

Hazel earned the complete-game win after giving up five runs – two earned – on nine hits and six walks with three strikeouts.

Seth Peterson suffered the loss after allowing 11 runs – seven earned – on 10 hits and three walks with a strikeout in three innings of work.

Matt Graham gave up three runs on eight hits and five walks with three strikeouts over the final six innings.
