Brian Wilkins was born August 5, 1968 at Huron, to Don and Ila (Wiseman) Wilkins. He grew up the youngest of 4 siblings on the family farm near Bancroft.
After graduating from De Smet High School in 1986, Brian held jobs at Wallum’s Corner in Manchester, and Wilbrecht’s in Huron. His limitations did not slow him down even after major back surgery in 2001, because he loved life!
Brian was an avid outdoorsman. A neighbor, Kenny (Tuffy) Currier, took him fishing at the age of 8 and he was “hooked”! He especially enjoyed showing others the tricks of the trade. He spent a number of years acting as a fishing guide for local guide services around the area. Another favorite past time was hunting…deer, pheasant, geese, ducks, and coyotes, just to name a few.
Brian loved the Dallas Cowboys and SDSU basketball. He enjoyed going to Frost Arena to watch the Jackrabbits, and that experience became even more memorable when he met two of his favorites, Telly and Daum!
Most importantly, Brian was a friend. He was kind, caring, generous, witty, hilarious, and around his friends, he was known as STUMP the LEGEND! When a spinal condition paralyzed him in December 2016, he became confined to a wheelchair, with a cupholder for his Mountain Dew, and became a resident of United Living Community, Brookings, where he brought life and humor to everyone he met.
Survivors include his sisters, Jennifer Satter (Lyle Bowes), Brookings; Melanie (Earl) Hinricher, Forestburg; brother, Murray Wilkins, Bancroft; nieces Ellie (Mike) Livingston, Brookings; Abby (Bryant) Ortega, St. Paul MN; Katie (Brandon) Wienk, Sioux Falls; Greta Hinricher (fiancé, Jake Krohmer), Forestburg; and nephew, Elliot (Lara) Hinricher, Huron; great-nieces, Cora Jane Livingston, Penelope Livingston, Quinn Wienk, and Ignatius Ortega; Aunt Delda Gilbertson, De Smet; many cousins, and a special friend, Lauren Himley, Brookings.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and one brother-in-law, Gary Satter.
