Thursday, July 12

The summer concert series Downtown at Sundown kicks off its 2018 season from 5-9 p.m. Thursday, July 12, in the 300 block of Fifth Street. The headliner this week is the 147th Army Band SGT ROCK. Bring your dancing shoes because this band does it all, from pop hits to rock and roll classics.

The family-friendly event also includes food and retail vendors and free kids’ activities. Admission is free.

The Brookings Library Puppeteers’ next puppet show is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, July 12, at the library. All are welcome to come enjoy the fun.

Friday, July 13

The Brookings Public Library will host a kids’ movie matinee at 1 p.m. Friday, July 13, with the screening of “Aristocats.”

Bingo at the Brookings VFW, 520 Main Ave., is from 6:30-10 p.m. Friday, July 13. Cards are handed out at 6:30, and bingo starts at 7. Lunch will be available. For more information, call 692-6771.

The Brookings Public Library’s next game night, Game On, is set for 6:30-9:30 p.m. Friday, July 13, in the Cooper Room. They’ll have games available to choose from, or feel free to bring your own to play with a group.

Yellowstone Films will host a screening of “Farmer of the Year” at 7 p.m. Friday in the Larson Concert Hall on the SDSU campus.

The film is 104 minutes long and was filmed in southwest Minnesota and South Dakota and stars Barry Corbin (“Northern Exposure,” “No Country for Old Men”) and Terry Kiser (“Weekend at Bernie’s”).  PG rating, low-key drama/comedy with typically understated Midwestern humor.

Saturday, July 14

The Value-Added Agriculture Development Center is partnering with S.D. Specialty Producers Association and South Dakota State University Extension to host a Meat and Dairy Goat Workshop from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, July 14, at the Alfred Dairy Science Building on the SDSU campus.

The 47th annual Brookings Summer Arts Festival is set for Saturday and Sunday, July 14-15, in Pioneer Park. Saturday hours are 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Come experience 200 top national artists, 38 food booths, 28 edibles and naturals artisans, 10 antique and collectibles booths, an interactive children’s area, 20 living history booths, and live entertainment throughout the weekend at South Dakota’s finest two-day festival.

Sunday, July 15

The 47th annual Brookings Summer Arts Festival continues from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, July 15, in Pioneer Park. Come experience 200 top national artists, 38 food booths, 28 edibles and naturals artisans, 10 antique and collectibles booths, an interactive children’s area, 20 living history booths, and live entertainment throughout the weekend at South Dakota’s finest two-day festival.

A dance will be held from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, July 15, at the Elkton Community Center. Howard and Sonja will provide live music, and a potluck is planned. All are welcome.

Praise in the Park by the Master’s Voice Quartet will be held from 7-8 p.m. Sunday, July 15, in Arlington City Park. Bring a lawn chair. All are invited for a time of fellowship and free ice cream following the concert.

Monday, July 16

The Brookings County Museum complex and its new Trygve A. Trooien Horse-Drawn Museum in Volga’s City Park are free and open seven days a week, 1-4 p.m.

Tuesday, July 17

The next installment of Great American Read Books vs. Movies starts at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, with the movie screening of “The Great Gatsby” at the Brookings Public Library.

Wednesday, July 18

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

The Brookings Public Library’s Super Special Wednesdays continue with The Hanson Family at 1 and 3 p.m. July 18. Come to the library to see Mark Hanson, two-time Guiness World Record holder for speed juggling, his national unicycle champion daughter, Christa, and the rest of the family perform amazing tricks.

The Brookings Beading Group meets from 6-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, at the Brookings Public Library. Bring your projects to work on and spend quality beading time with people who enjoy your passion.
