Brookings County 4-H Achievement Days continue at the Swiftel Center and Larson Ice Arena in Brookings. Tuesday, July 31, events include the Companion Animal Show (including cats) at 10 a.m.

The Brookings Optimist Club will host a New Optimist Welcome event from 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, at the event space next door to Wooden Legs Brewing Co. in downtown Brookings. Come learn about the club and how it supports youth and community activities in Brookings. Free pizza and beverages will be served, and families are welcome. Wednesday, Aug. 1

Brookings County 4-H Achievement Days continue at the Swiftel Center and Larson Ice Arena in Brookings. Wednesday events include: 4-H exhibits open and Meat Goat Show, 8 a.m.; Dairy Goat Show with all Goat Showmanship to follow, 9 a.m.; Dairy Cattle Show, 10 a.m.; Beef Fitting Contest/parade, 1 p.m.; Beef Show, 2 p.m.; Poultry Show, 3 p.m.; Rabbit Show, 5 p.m.; dance, 8:30-10 p.m.; exhibits close, 9 p.m.

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

Staff from the office of U.S. Sen. Mike Rounds will visit Brookings from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, to assist residents with any issues they may have dealing with federal agencies. The staff will be at the Brookings City & County Government Center in the County Commission Room, 520 Third St., Suite 210, Brookings.

Bingo at the Brookings VFW, 520 Main Ave., is from 6:30-10 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1. Cards are handed out at 6:30, and bingo starts at 7. Lunch will be available. For more information, call 692-6771.

Thursday, Aug. 2

Brookings County 4-H Achievement Days continue at the Swiftel Center and Larson Ice Arena in Brookings. Thursday events include the Swine Show, 7:30 a.m.; exhibits open, 8 a.m.; Sheep Show, 10 a.m.; 4-H Barbecue, 5-7 p.m.; Fashion Revue style show and Good Neighbor Award, 6 p.m.; Round Robin Showmanship contest and 4-H graduation, 7 p.m.; buildings close, 8 p.m.

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from noon-5 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

The Fine Art Exhibit and Competition, the Brookings Arts Council’s annual juried multi-media art exhibition, opens Wednesday, Aug. 1, at the Brookings Arts Council. A reception will begin at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2. Winners, along with monetary awards, will be announced during a ceremony at 5 p.m. 

Regular gallery hours are noon-5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. The exhibit continues through Aug. 24. Admission is free.

The summer concert series Downtown at Sundown continues its 2018 season from 5-9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, in the 300 block of Fifth Street. The headliner this week is Whosah. Hailing from across the border in Minnesota, Whosah is a personal indie pop band featuring an eclectic mix of techno beats and meaningful lyrics. These five young men are pursuing the music they love and put on a great show while doing so.

The family-friendly event also includes food and retail vendors and free kids’ activities. Admission is free.

The current state of affairs in Turkey will be highlighted in a lecture by Dr. Sinan Ciddi, “Democracies in Decline: The Case of Turkey,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, at the South Dakota State Research Park, 2301 Research Park Way, room 153.

The lecture, sponsored by the South Dakota World Affairs Council, is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served following the talk and questions.  

Ciddi, president of the Institute of Turkish Studies, is a visiting lecturer at Georgetown University. For additional information, call 695-2687.

The Brookings Library Puppeteers’ next puppet show is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, at the library. All are welcome to come enjoy the family friendly show.

Friday, Aug. 3

Aurora Gala Days 2018 kick off Friday, Aug. 3, with citywide rummage sales. Also planned is bingo at the community center from 7:30-9 p.m. For more information, log onto www.facebook.com/AuroraGalaDays.

The 31st annual McCrory Gardens Garden Party will be held from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, at the gardens. The schedule includes: coffee on the terrace, 10 a.m.-noon; “Annuals on Canvas” painting class, $25, 10:30 a.m.; yoga in the gardens, $5, 11 a.m.; guided garden tours, 2 p.m. with Forestry Specialist Dr. John Ball, 4 p.m. with the gardens’ Chris and Christina, and 5 p.m. with Entomology Specialist Amanda Bachman; recognition of Butterfly Garden donors and Cottage Garden renovation announcement, 6 p.m.; and SDSU ice cream, music from Phil Baker and Friends of Murph, caricature artist, Balloon Squad and inflatables, 6:30-8 p.m.

Paramedic Wendy Long will teach Brookings Health System’s next Safe Sitter class from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, in hospital conference room C. The class, recommended for young teens, 11 to 16 years old, teaches how to safely care for younger children and includes First Aid and CPR.

Cost is $60 and includes a babysitting handbook for students to keep. Class size is limited. To register, visit www.brookingshealth.org/SafeSitter.

Saturday, Aug. 4

Aurora Gala Days 2018 continue Saturday, Aug. 4. Events include yoga in the park, 6:45 a.m.; Fun Run 5K, starting at 8 a.m. at the community center; bloodmobile, 8 a.m.-noon on Broadway Avenue; pancake feed, 8-10 a.m. at Little Hall; arts and craft vendors in the park, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; volleyball tournament starts, 10 a.m.; kids bike parade, 10:30 a.m.; parade, 11 a.m.; car/motorcycle show, noon on Broadway Avenue; bean bag tournament, 1 p.m. by Lemke’s; and a cook-off sponsored by the fire department, 2:30 p.m.

Brookings Regional Humane Society’s Putts Fore Paws charity golf tournament is set for Saturday, Aug. 4, at EdgeBrook Golf Course, with 8 a.m. registration and a 9 a.m. shotgun start. The four-person scramble costs $75 per player, which includes 18 holes, a cart and lunch. The event includes raffles, a silent auction, and lots of prizes.
