The Brookings County Republican Summer Picnic starts at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, at Hillcrest Park in Brookings. Pizza will be served, and $5 donations are appreciated. 

This is area residents’ opportunity to meet with state and local Republican elected officials and candidates.

Bingo at the Brookings VFW, 520 Main Ave., is from 6:30-10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10. Cards are handed out at 6:30, and bingo starts at 7. Lunch will be available. For more information, call 692-6771.

The next Game On card and board game night is set for 6:30-9:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, in the Brookings Public Library’s Cooper Room. Play one of the library’s games, or bring your own.

Bandytown Productions and the Volga Area Community Arts Council present “Greater Tuna” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, at the Sioux Valley Performing Arts Center. Doors open at 7 p.m., and tickets are $6 at the door. The show is intended for mature audiences.

Saturday, Aug. 11

The 16th annual Back to School Clothing Giveaway will be held from 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, Aug. 11, at Brookings First Assembly of God Church, at the corner of 17th Avenue South and Orchard Drive. Items available at the free event will include clothing in all sizes, shoes, book bags, purses, bedding, small appliances and home décor. For more information, call Frankie at 692-0407.

Women in the Outdoors Field Day is set for 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at the Beacon Hill Rifle and Pistol Club. Cost is $5 per person for those 10 and older. Activities include shooting rifles, archery, pistols, shotguns, muzzleloaders, 3-gun demos, knife throw and cowboy auction. A hot dog lunch will be served at noon.

Wireless World’s Backpack to School backpack giveaway will be held from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Aug. 11, at Wireless World, 1726 Sixth St., Brookings. Backpacks filled with school supplies will be given away while supplies last. A child must be present to claim a free backpack.

The annual Wing & Brew Fest is set for noon-8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at the Swiftel Center in Brookings. Come enjoy wings and craft beer from a variety of vendors with the purchase of sampling tickets, live music, sand volleyball, kickball and bean bag tournaments, inflatables and more. General admission is $8 and free for kids 12 and younger.

Blue Dasher Farm presents “Soil Health: The Solution to Dicamba?,” a field day in regenerative agriculture, starting at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at the northeast corner of exit 157 on Interstate 29 (the Brandt exit, wood house with a purple roof).

The field day incudes speakers and a roundtable discussion, with a theme of how ecological approaches can reduce the need for herbicides while improving farmland diversity and making farmers more profitable. A free supper will follow for 200 attendees.

The Brookings County Museum complex and its new Trygve A. Trooien Horse-Drawn Museum in Volga’s City Park are free and open seven days a week, 1-4 p.m.

The North American Manure Expo will be held Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 15-16 at the Swiftel Center in Brookings. Wednesday hours are 8 a.m.- 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. The Expo combines three attractions into one event: Industry trade show; manure technology demonstrations; and educational events and continuing education. The Brookings Community Opioid Guardianship Forum will be held Thursday, Aug. 16, at the Brookings City & County Government Center inside the chambers, Room 310. Two one-hour long sessions will be held starting at noon and 7 p.m. respectively. All regional community members are welcome to attend the free event. No registration is required.

Each session will include an introduction about the impact the national opioid crisis plays at a local level in the Brookings area. A panel discussion featuring law enforcement officials, health care providers and chemical dependency personnel will follow. Panel topics will focus on upstream prevention and appropriate prescribing; addiction, treatment, and relapse prevention; and diversion prevention/medication disposal. Both sessions will conclude with an audience question and answer period.

The summer concert series Downtown at Sundown continues its 2018 season from 5-9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, in the 300 block of Fifth Street. The headliner this week is Kirsten Thien. Returning to the stage all the way from New York City,Thien’s mix of blues, R&B and soulful jazz brings together old-world Chicago with New Orleans flavor and a Memphis kick. Her influences include Otis Redding, B.B. King and Aretha Franklin.

The family-friendly event also includes food and retail vendors and free kids’ activities. Admission is free.
