The Brookings County Museum complex and its new Trygve A. Trooien Horse-Drawn Museum in Volga’s City Park are free and open seven days a week, 1-4 p.m.

The Brookings Pubic Library’s next Adult Craft Night starts at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13, in the upstairs Cooper Room. Participants will make toilet paper tube flowers. All materials will be supplied. Registration is required; call 692-9407 or stop by the library to sign up.

Wednesday, Aug. 15

The North American Manure Expo will be held Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 15-16, at the Swiftel Center in Brookings. Wednesday hours are 8 a.m.- 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. The Expo combines three attractions into one event: Industry trade show; manure technology demonstrations; and educational events and continuing education. The Brookings Community Opioid Guardianship Forum will be held Thursday, Aug. 16, at the Brookings City & County Government Center inside the chambers, Room 310. Two one-hour long sessions will be held starting at noon and 7 p.m. respectively. All regional community members are welcome to attend the free event. No registration is required.

Each session will include an introduction about the impact the national opioid crisis plays at a local level in the Brookings area. A panel discussion featuring law enforcement officials, health care providers and chemical dependency personnel will follow. Panel topics will focus on upstream prevention and appropriate prescribing; addiction, treatment, and relapse prevention; and diversion prevention/medication disposal. Both sessions will conclude with an audience question and answer period.

The summer concert series Downtown at Sundown continues its 2018 season from 5-9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, in the 300 block of Fifth Street. The headliner this week is Kirsten Thien. Returning to the stage all the way from New York City, Thien’s mix of blues, R&B and soulful jazz brings together old-world Chicago with New Orleans flavor and a Memphis kick. Her influences include Otis Redding, B.B. King and Aretha Franklin.

The family-friendly event also includes food and retail vendors and free kids’ activities. Admission is free.

The Brookings Public Library’s next movie night is set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, with the screening of “Wonder.” The movie is free and open to all. Rated PG, 113 minutes.

Friday, Aug. 17

South Dakota State University welcomes Jackrabbits near and far to campus for Move-In Weekend, starting at 8 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17. Students and families are invited to a welcome picnic at 5 p.m. west of the Student Union, and that’s followed by a Jackrabbit Block Party at 6 p.m. on Larson Green, and a Wellness Center Extravaganza and dance from 7 p.m. to midnight.

GracePoint Wesleyan Church will host a free Drive-In Movie Night on Friday, Aug. 17, at 1420 Orchard Drive, Brookings. The parking lot opens at 5 p.m. with the movie, “Despicable Me 3,” starting at dusk, around 8:30 p.m. Enjoy the movie from your parking space, or bring blankets and chairs if you prefer. Popcorn and candy will be available.

Saturday, Aug. 18

Move-in weekend continues Saturday, Aug. 18, at South Dakota State University with Convocation and a picnic at Frost Arena at 11 a.m. and ThumpStart at 1 p.m.

Fields of Grace presents Sidewalk Prophets David Dunn and Jacob Daniel, bringing fun, family, faith and music to the Arlington baseball field starting at 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18. Gates open at 3:30 p.m. Activities for kids and adults include musicians, speakers and food vendors. Tickets are $15 apiece at eventbrite.com and $20 at the gate. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and sit back and enjoy the evening.

Midwest Maidens roller derby will host its second home bout of the season when it faces the Mankato Area Derby Girls on Saturday, Aug. 18, at Larson Ice Center. Doors open at 6 p.m., and wheels roll at 7 p.m. 

Sunday, Aug. 19

The VFW Auxiliary invites the community to a Sunday brunch from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 19 at the post home, 520 Main Ave., Brookings. The menu includes scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage, toast, coffee and juice for $7. The Works includes the above breakfast with a separate plate of biscuits and gravy for $9.  Children ages 3 to 7 eat for $4, and 2 and younger are free.
