The Brookings County Museum complex and its new Trygve A. Trooien Horse-Drawn Museum in Volga’s City Park are free and open seven days a week, 1-4 p.m.

The Brookings Public Library’s Non-fiction Book Club meets at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27, and will discuss “Informing the News: The Need for Knowledge-Based Journalism” by Thomas Patterson. This discussion of the One Book South Dakota is made possible with a grant from the South Dakota Humanities Council. All are welcome to attend.

South Dakota State University instructor Anna DeGraff, a mezzo-soprano, will perform a faculty voice recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27, in the Peterson Recital Hall. Admission is free, and the public is invited.

Tuesday, Aug. 28

The South Dakota State Historic Preservation Office will host a presentation on a historic architecture survey project in Moody County.

The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, at the Moody County Museum, 706 E. Pipestone Ave., Flandreau. Moody County features 18 properties already listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Everyone is welcome to come enjoy free bowling, food and door prizes at the Brookings USBC Bowling Kick-off, set for Tuesday, Aug. 28, at Prairie Lanes, 722 Western Ave. 

Food will be served at 6 p.m., and the annual meeting and awards are at 7 p.m. Two free games of bowling will follow, and four memberships will be drawn. A free-will offering will be taken for the Brookings Police Department.

The Brookings Public Library’s next Adult Craft Night will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, in the upstairs Cooper Room. Participants will make wire and nail polish flowers. Registration is required; call 692-9407 or stop by the library to sign up.

Brookings PFLAG will discuss favorite LGBTQ books and films at its meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, at the Brookings Public Library. PFLAG is a support group for parent, family and friends of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders.

Wednesday, Aug. 29

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

The eighth annual Heroes Behind the Badges Blood Drive will be held from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and 3-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, at the Brookings Hy-Vee. The Brookings fire and police departments will compete again this year to see who can recruit the most blood donors. Walk-ins are welcome.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) fall open house is planned for 2-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, in the First Lutheran Church lobby by Mission Coffeehouse, 337 Eighth St., Brookings. The event includes a ribbon cutting at 2 p.m., OLLI overview and root beer floats at 2:15 p.m., Dr. Tim Schorn presenting “What in the World is Happening (in the World)?” from 2:30-3 p.m., and registration for OLLI and fall 2018 courses from 3-3:30 p.m.

The 2018 SDSU Student Part-time Job Fair is set for 3-5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, in Volstorff Ballroom at the University Student Union.

The SDSU Yellow and Blue Block Party, part of the second annual One Day for STATE event, will be held from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, at the SDSU Alumni Association, 815 Medary Ave.

Bust out your yellow and blue and join in for a night of celebrating SDSU. Food trucks, Pride performance at 6:30 p.m., SDSU athlete signatures, free SDSU ice cream, Bummobile, and tons of kid activities are planned.

Thursday, Aug. 30

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from noon-5 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

An artist reception with Erin Nguyen is set for 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, with an artist talk at 5 p.m., at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Nguyen is showing “Live and Let Live: A Study of Organic Forms,” an exhibition of ceramic handbuilt sculptures and vessels, through Sept. 21 at the BAC.

The 2018 Mayor’s Awards reception will honor the winners of the Mayor’s Sustainability Awards, Butler Human Rights Award, Human Rights Commission’s Youth Ally Awards, ABLE Awards, Mayor’s Awards for Historic Preservation and the Mayor’s Generational Leadership Award from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, at the McCrory Gardens Education & Visitors Center, 631 22nd Ave., with the program beginning at 6 p.m. 

The public is invited to attend. Hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will be served.

South Dakota Art Museum is hosting a free public reception from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, to celebrate the contemporary Japanese ceramics exhibition currently on view. Light Japanese appetizers, Japanese tea and Green Tea ice cream from the SDSU Dairy will be served.

At 5:45 p.m., a film will be shown in the auditorium providing a comprehensive overview of the origins and aesthetics of the 55 pieces featured in the exhibition. Friday, Aug. 31

Brookings Critical Mass is an all-ages community bicycle ride held the last Friday of the month. For this month, the organization will have a back-to-school theme, with a route connecting some of the schools in town and the new roundabout on campus. Riders will meet at the corner of Main Avenue and Fifth Street by 6 p.m. Aug. 31. The group usually eats downtown afterward. Saturday, Sept. 1

The 14th annual DAV 727th Charity Poker Run is set for Saturday, Sept. 1. Registration starts at 10 a.m., and vehicles depart at high noon from the National Guard Armory on Fifth Street South, Brookings. Registration is $20 per person, and all vehicles are welcome. Proceeds benefit the DAV Hospital Transportation Fund.
