Saturday, Sept. 8

The Oakwood Open Charity Disc Golf Tournament is set for Saturday, Sept. 8, at Oakwood Lakes State Park. Registration starts at 10 a.m. at the first tee box, or pre-register at Cleanslate Design + Print, and the tournament starts at noon. Cost is $25 plus a donation for the Brookings County Food Pantry. All proceeds go to the Brookings Volunteer Service Bank. A park sticker or day pass is required to be in the park, and group camping is available for $10 per person per night.

The Brookings Arts Council will host an alcohol ink flowers class from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept. 8, at 524 Fourth St. Participants will create flowers with alcohol ink on tiles. Cost is $45 per person. For more information, log onto www.brookingsartscouncil.org or call 692-4177.

An Insect Festival is set for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at McCrory Gardens. Admission is free to the family friendly event celebrating our six-plus legged friends. Activities include monarch tagging, an insect costume parade, crafts, insect photo contest, assemble-an-arthropod contest, edible insects, games, bouncy house, insect education and more.

Schadé Vineyard and Winery’s annual Grape Stomp will be held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, one mile west of Volga on U.S. Highway 14. Admission is $5 per person, and kids 12 and younger get in for free. Activities include demonstrations, a grape-stomping competition, music, lunch for purchase, a family activity area, and juice and wine sampling.

Midwest Maidens roller derby will take on the Forx Roller Derby team in their third and last home bout of this season, set for Saturday, Sept. 8, at Larson Ice Arena. Doors open at 6 p.m., and wheels roll at 7 p.m. General admission is $10, and kids 5 and younger are free.

Sunday, Sept. 9

GracePoint Wesleyan Church’s fall kick-off is set for 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, at the Swiftel Center in Brookings. The relocated service will allow the entire congregation to be together for one Sunday. Following the service, there will be a baptism celebration and cookout. All activities are free and open to the public, and free childcare will be available on site.

The Children’s Museum of South Dakota is celebrating eight years with its annual Free Day of Play on Sunday, Sept. 9. The public is invited to explore the museum, located in downtown Brookings, at no charge from noon-5 p.m. Then museum members are invited to continue the celebration with Camp Kidoodle from 5-7 p.m. Camp Kidoodle will feature lawn games, sleeping bag races and other camping-inspired prairie fun. Reservations are not required for the public or museum member event.

Monday, Sept. 10

Jason Ravnsborg, candidate for South Dakota attorney general, will be a guest speaker at the Brookings County Republican noon luncheon Monday, Sept. 17, at the Pheasant Restaurant & Lounge. The public is invited. For more information, call 691-2018.

Brookings Health System’s free six-week educational series Understanding Grief, led by social worker Denise Larson, will begin Monday, Sept. 10. There will be two class sessions, and participants may attend either one on Mondays in hospital Conference Room D. The first session will be held from 1-2:30 p.m., and the second session will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. The content will be the same for both. The free class series is open to everyone. A free screening of the movie “Dream Big: Engineering Our World” will be presented by Banner Associates and Daktronics from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, at Brookings Cinema 8. Explore the exciting world of engineering and the many paths you can take. Stay after the movie for a presentation on an engineer’s real-world experience with Engineers Without Borders. The Brookings County American Legion will hold its September meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10 at the Aurora Community Center (across the street from Lemke’s). After the meeting, there will be a short program with lunch to follow. All Legionnaires in Brookings County are encouraged to attend.

South Dakota Art Museum is hosting a free public reception from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, to celebrate the My Hero! Contemporary Art & Superhero Action exhibition on display through Oct. 2. Light hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will be served. At 5:45, Ricky Ganzi, M.A., English instructor at Brookings High School, will present a talk, “Therapy, Not Fatigue: The Multifariously Wonderful Divine Existence of Modern Hero Myth.”

The Brookings Maker Festival will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, on Kidoodle Way, in front of the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. The family friendly community event will celebrate making of all types: high tech, arts and crafts, electronics, food, woodworking and more. It’s free to participate and free to attend.

The Sultanate of Oman and its role as a peaceful nation in the Middle East will be the topic of discussion when Linda Pappas Funsch, a professor at Frederick Community College in Maryland, visits South Dakota on Thursday, Sept. 13.

Funsch’s talk, held at the Lohr Building’s Woster Celebration Hall at 815 Medary Ave., starts at 7 p.m. as part of the South Dakota World Affairs Council’s programming.
