Brookings-area musicians do well in state contest

The South Dakota Music Teachers Association recently met for its state conference on the campus of the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.

Local winners in the SDMTA piano competition include Junior Piano Age 13, Quinn Ulvestad, second place, (teacher, Deb Kalsbeck), Senior Piano Age 15, Aedan Lansang, honorable mention (teacher, Xuan Kuang), Senior Piano Age 16, Alex Shore, honorable mention, (teacher, Mark Stevens), Senior Piano Age 17-18, Max Donelan, second place, (teacher Mark Stevens), Junior Piano Duet Age 12-13, Natalie Kahler and Quinn Ulvestad, first place, (teacher Deb Kalsbeck) and Senior Piano Duets Age 16-18, Alex Shore and Albert Shore, first place, (teacher Mark Stevens). Also participating in Junior Piano Age 12 was Louis Liu.

Adjudicators for the SDMTA piano events were Suzanne Skyrm from Vermillion and Anne Madison from Omaha, Nebraska

Local winners in the SDMTA collegiate competition include Jamie O’Neill, first place in collegiate piano (teacher Mark Stevens), Caroline Reynor, first place in collegiate brass (teacher David Reynolds) Arianna Rice, first place in collegiate voice I (teacher Laura Diddle), Jamee Kattner (teacher Laura Diddle) and Charles Kriech (teacher Emily Toronto), both honorable mention. Also participating were Jamie O’Neill and Eric Lohr who competed in the collegiate voice II competition.

Adjudicators for collegiate piano competition were Anne Madison from Omaha, Nebaska; for collegiate brass, Matthew Erickson, from Sioux Falls and for collegiate voice, Timothy Woods from Aberdeen. and Natalie Campbell from Sioux Falls.

Advancing to regional MTNA competition is Matthew Dulas, winner of the young artist brass competition (teacher David Reynolds). Sylvia Kattner was named alternate in the young artist voice competition (teacher Laura Diddle) and honorable mention went to Ethan Dingman in the young artist woodwind competition (teacher Michael Walsh).

Also participating were Jamison Gross in the young artist voice competition and Jacob Pfeifer in the young artist piano competition.

Adjudicators for the MTNA young artist competition were Matthew Erickson from Sioux Falls for the Brass, Natalie Campbell from Sioux Falls, for the voice and Holly Haddad from Sioux City, Iowa, for the woodwinds.
